Music Videos - July 2006

"Buttons" is the fourth single taken from The Pussycat Dolls' debut album, PCD. It became their fourth top three single in the UK and Australia, and their third top five single in the US.
Before the release of Buttons, the Pussycat Dolls decided to mix it up a bit by bringing in Snoop Dogg and adding in two rap verses. The version of "Buttons" on the PCD album does not include Snoop Dogg.
The music video was shot in March 2006 by production company DNA and was directed by Francis Lawrence. It has proven to be very popular and has been topping the viewer's interactive charts such as MTV Hits.

Buttons has just debuted at number 2 in Australia.

S&M was Metallica's ninth album, recorded live with the San Francisco Symphony on April 21 and 22, 1999.
The S&M album is two disks, with songs released by the band from 1984 to 1997. "Nothing Else Matters" is the first track on Disk 2, and the music video is below.

This song originally came from their self titled album which is often referred to as "The Black Album" (1991). The Black Album has been Metallica's biggest success selling over 14 million copies in the US alone. Interestingly, many fans expressed disappointment at the new direction taken by Metallica with The Black Album, as it presented a more radio-friendly, commercially accessible Metallica, especially with the ballad Nothing Else Matters. Nonetheless the album was critically and commercially praised, and it earned the band a legion of new fans.

Kelly Clarkson - Because of You

July 27th 2006 05:42
"Because of You" is the fourth single from Breakaway, Kelly Clarkson's second album. It was released towards the end of 2005 and was quite successful reaching #4 in Australia and #7 in the US and UK. It was co-written by Clarkson, Ben Moody, and David Hodges. The song is one of Clarkson's most personal as she originally wrote the lyrics when she was sixteen years old to deal with her emotional pain at the time.
The video itself is based on a true story of Clarkson's troubled childhood, due to the nature of the video, she asked her parents for permission before it was created.
Interestingly, American and Australian Idol contestants have since covered this song on the show.

Eminem - Without Me

July 26th 2006 07:59
Eminem has had numerous hits since his debut album "The Slim Shady LP" in 1999. Sadly for fans, he hasn't released anything new since his best of "Curtain Call" album in 2005. There is speculation that Eminem is planning on retiring from his rapping career, hence the name "Curtain Call", to become a producer and label executive. On MTV music he recently announced that he is not planning on retiring, instead just taking a break to focus on producing.
The music video for "Without Me", has won Eminem more music video awards that any other song, claiming the Best Direction, Best Rap Video, Best Male Video and Video of the Year at the MTV Music Video Awards in 2002. It also won Best Short Form Music Video at the Grammy Awards of 2003. The song itself, which features on "The Eminem Show" and Curtain Call albums was also a huge hit, reaching #1 in 12 countries including the UK and Australia.

The video itself features Eminem as Rap Boy, a parody of Robin (as in Batman and Robin), trying to save the youth from the bad influence of music, making fun of his critics. These include Dick Cheney (and his wife Lynne Cheney), the FCC and MTV, Chris Kirkpatrick (of *NSYNC), Limp Bizkit and Moby. Jenna Jameson also appears in bed with Eminem at the beginning of the video.

American Idiot is Green Day's seventh studio album and first rock opera, and was released in 2004. It made No. 1 in the US, UK and Australia. "Wake Me Up When September Ends" is the fourth single from American Idiot, and is well known for its music video, which paints a drawn out intimate portrait of a wartime situation. This video adds to Green Day's American Idiot feeling of anti-war sentiment, building on protest to the US invasion and occupation of Iraq.
The video strays from the original meaning of song. Green Day's lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong wrote the lyrics as a memorial anthem about his father who died in the month of September when he was just 10 years old. As Armstrong associates pain with the month September, he would rather not deal with anything related to the month prompting him to sing, "As my memory rests, but never forgets what I lost... Wake me up when September ends..."

"Unfaithful" is the second single released from Rihanna's second album A Girl Like Me. The first single "SOS", became her first #1 in Australia and Unfaithful has just debuted at number #2.
Rihanna's musical influences are R&B, dancehall, and soca. Unfaithful is her first ballad, as her previous singles have all been up-tempo.

AC/DC - Thunderstruck

July 21st 2006 06:51
AC/DC are the most successful and well-known band to hail from Australia. They were formed in Sydney in 1973 by rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young and his brother, lead guitarist Angus Young. The band has sold 150 million albums world wide, making them one of the most successful hard rock acts ever. Their success culminated in 1980 when they released the "Back in Black" album which became one of the highest selling albums of all time with sales in excess of 40 million copies. They are still going strong today, last year AC/DC finished second in a list of highest-earning entertainers from Australia for 2005.

"Thunderstruck", released in 1990 off the "Razor's Edge" album, was a big hit for AC/DC. Angus Young found inspiration for the song when on a plane. There was an extremely loud clap of thunder, a hostess then stood up and said "It's OK, we've just been struck by thunder". The song still has wide ranging appeal, being used for player introductions at various sporting clubs around the world including Super 14 side the Wellington Hurricanes in New Zealand, Major League Baseball club the Chicago White Sox and WNBA side the Seattle Storm in the USA. It has also recently being used by Holden in Australia for it's SS Ute advertising campaigns.

Contrary to popular belief, Angus Young does not play Thunderstruck's main riff with one hand. Instead, he picks every first note and pulls-off every second note. The one-handed tapping technique is only in the Thunderstruck music video and at their concert at Donington Castle in 1991 for show. The music video for Thunderstruck was filmed at London's Brixton Academy.

Revolution - The Veronicas

July 20th 2006 07:15
While looking at music videos for the Veronicas I stumbled across the clip for their next single "Revolution", which is actually due out on the 4th August. The music video for this song features bits and pieces of The Veronicas Brisbane concert on their last tour in Australia. It also shows some backstage moments on camera and moments from fans in the crowd.

By now we all should know who The Veronicas are, Lisa and Jess Origliasso, born on Christmas Day, 1984 in Brisbane. Their debut Album "The Secret Life Of..." has been in the ARIA Top 50 Album chart for 39 weeks now, and should stay a while longer with their 4th single "Revolution" to be released on the 4th August. Even though their first single 4Ever's music video won the award for best video of the year at the MTV Australia Video Music Awards, I thought I would post the video for "When it All Falls Apart", as it's my favourite music video and single they've released so far.

Eskimo Joe formed in 1997 in Fremantle, Western Australia. Their first album "Girl" (2001) only reached #29 on the Australian charts but they hit the big time in 2004 with "A Song is a City" which made it all the way to #2 and contained the hits "From The Sea", and "Older Than You". Things have improved further for Eskimo Joe in 2006 with the release of their third studio album "Black Fingernails, Red Wine" which debuted at #1 and the single of the same name has been slowly climbing the singles charts reaching #6 this week.

Paris Hilton - Stars Are Blind

July 17th 2006 05:07
What's Paris Hilton doing in a music videos blog you ask? Well, she has a single out, called "Stars are Blind" and it just debuted at #7 on the Australian charts. Incidentally it's currently at #3 in Canada and #18 in the US where it was released in June. Stars are Blind is a reggae influenced track and is the first single released off her debut Album "Paris". The second and third singles are titled "Turn it up" and "Screwed" respectively, both of which are due out around August/ September.
Paris founded her own label, Heiress Records. It is a sub-label of Warner Brothers Records and was created in 2004. She also plans to eventually sign new artists.

I heard that she was going out with the guy in the video clip, whether she still is or not I don't know.

Cassie - Me & U

July 14th 2006 02:09
Cassandra Ventura best known by her stage name Cassie, was born to a Filipino father and African-American/Mexican mother in 1986 in New London, Connecticut. She sings R&B, pop, and hip-hop.
"Me & U" is her first hit single, and comes from her self titled album. The single was leaked onto the internet and became a club hit, and has spawned three official urban remixes. It has currently reached #3 in the US plus the music video is receiving heavy rotation on music video channels there. The music video below is the later, higher budget version.

Wolfmother - Woman

July 13th 2006 03:54
Wolfmother is an Australian band from Erskineville in Sydney. They are a "retro-rock" act and are inspired by rock groups of the 1970s such as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple.
Their debut album reached #3 on the Australian charts and "Woman" is their third single to hit the Australian charts.
The music video was directed by Alex and Martin who also directed the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" and U2's "Vertigo". The video was created using a technique called colour copy. This is where every image is extracted, printed, colour copied and then put back in order.

Guns N' Roses - November Rain

July 12th 2006 03:30
"November Rain" appears on the album Use Your Illusion 1. At 8 minutes and 57 seconds, it is an epic rock ballad and one of the most popular songs by the band Guns N' Roses (written by Axl Rose). It consistently remains one of the most requested songs on rock music radio stations. However, as well known as the song is itself, perhaps a greater amount of attention is given to the music video, which, in 1992, the year it was released, quickly became the most requested video on MTV and won an MTV Video Music Award for best cinematography.
