Crazy - Gnarls Barkley

August 30th 2006 07:28
"Crazy" is the first single from Gnarls Barkley, a musical collaboration between Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo, and is taken from their 2006 debut album St. Elsewhere. The song became a top ten hit throughout Europe, North America and Oceania, reaching number one of the single charts in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Demark, Canada, New Zealand and other countries.
Musically, "Crazy" was inspired by film scores of spaghetti Westerns.

Going along with the psychedelic theme of the song, Gnarls Barkley's music video for "Crazy" is done in the style of the Rorschach inkblot test. Animated, mirrored inkblots morph into another, while taking on ambigious shapes. Both Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse appear in the shapes, as do the band's gunshot/heart logo and various animals, including centipedes, bats, spiders, and insects.

The video is nominated for three 2006 MTV Video Music Awards: Best Group Video, Best Direction, and Best Editing.

Paulina Rubio

August 29th 2006 06:46
Paulina Rubio Dosamantes (born June 17, 1971) is a Mexican singer and actress. Her music is popular in Latin America, Spain, and the United States.
She has sold over 15 million albums worldwide and is the number one female pop vocalist in Mexico.

Paulina Rubio's presence in the English-language market came in 2002. The hit single "Don't Say Goodbye" rose to the 41st position on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and whose music video became a regular on MTV's Total Request Live. On June 18, 2002, Border Girl, Rubio's first foray into English-language-Pop, was released. The album debuted at the 11th position on the Billboard Hot 200 Chart and was certified Gold in the US. Although her debut English album did not launch her into superstardom out of the Hispanic world, it did give Paulina the international recognition she sought for years. The music video for Don't Say Goodbye is below.

Paulina Rubio's forthcoming Spanish-language album is entitled "Ananda". It is Rubio's eighth studio album as a solo artist and is set to be released on September 19, 2006. The album's first single is the mellow rock-pop song, "Ni Una Sola Palabra".

The video features Paulina Rubio as super hero Pauwer-woman, whose habitat includes the skyscrapers of downtown Los Angeles. Marilyn Manson - The Dope Show

August 28th 2006 08:44
Mechanical Animals was Marilyn Manson's third full-length album, released on September 15, 1998. Four singles were released off the album: "The Dope Show", "Rock Is Dead", "I Don't Like the Drugs (But the Drugs Like Me)" and, only released promotionally and with a video, "Coma White". It is Manson's worldwide best-seller and all-around most critically-acclaimed work. Despite its success, the album was marred by controversy and is notorious for its shocking imagery. Initial sales were extremely strong but it became virtually blacklisted when it became the scapegoat of the Columbine shootings of 1999.

"The Dope Show" was Mechanical Animals' lead single. The song came at a point in the history of Marilyn Manson which saw the band shedding the dark, nihilistic trappings that had characterized the previous album, Antichrist Superstar. The single, a hard rock song styled after the 1970s work of T. Rex and David Bowie, acted as a sort of introduction to the band's new approach.
The song's verse and chorus structures, delivered in drastically different styles, give the song a "hybrid" feel: electronic sounds are juxtaposed with classic rock-derived guitar sounds for a tone that is both classic and futuristic

The music video itself is very surrealistic. It features Manson as an androgynous extraterrestrial wandering around the Hollywood Hills. He is captured, studied in a laboratory, and eventually transported by limousine to a stage where he and the other members of the band — the fictional band Omega and The Mechanical Animals — perform the song in concert before hysterical fans who end up rioting and crossing the security barriers.

The video won a 1999 MTV Video Music Award for "Best Cinematography", as well as the "Maximum Vision" award.

Guns N' Roses' - Sweet Child O' Mine

August 25th 2006 08:54
Appetite for Destruction was Guns N' Roses' breakthrough album. Beginning with the hit "Welcome to the Jungle", Appetite for Destruction combined elements of glam metal, then-groundbreaking thrash metal bands and classic, anthemic choruses. The album was a #1 American hit and worldwide sales exceeded 25 million. It is an RIAA Certified Diamond Album.

Sweet Child O' Mine was the second single off the album and Guns N' Roses' first No. 1, spending three weeks at the top spot in 1988.
This song is listed on the "100 Greatest Guitar Solos" from Guitar World as number thirty-seven, and also came in at number three on Blender's 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born, and at number 196 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In March 2005, Q magazine placed it at number 6 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks. The introduction's famous D-flat based riff was also voted number-one riff of all-time by the readers of Total Guitar magazine.

The music video is below.

In the video above the guitar riffs in the middle don't seem right. This one below has them correct, but doesn't have the opening riff! I looked around but couldn't find a perfect video.

Guns N' Roses’ are touring this year. Two days ago their official website was updated for the first time in 4 years. This is a huge development for some Guns N' Roses fans. Their next album, entitled "Chinese Democracy" which has been a work in progress since 1998, is also due out this year some time. Chinese Democracy has been in production for almost nine years at a cost of over thirteen million dollars, making it the most expensive album ever recorded.

Here is a clip of Guns N' Roses' on tour at Bercy in Paris this year. The bands current line up is:
Axl Rose - lead vocals
Robin Finck - lead guitar
Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal - lead guitar
Richard Fortus - rhythm guitar
Tommy Stinson - bass guitar

OK Go is an American rock band from Chicago, best known for their singles "Get Over It," "A Million Ways," and "Here it Goes Again."
The band are perhaps most famous for their music videos which have been ultra-low budget, one-take videos performing choreographed dances, sometimes even using a borrowed camera and in their own back yard. Their music video for A Million Ways was produced for $10, but was a viral internet sensation in late 2005.
The video for Here It Goes Again features an elaborately choreographed dance on treadmills. The video was viewed by over 1 million people on the media site YouTube in the first 6 days.
Who would have thought that 4 guys with 8 treadmills could be so entertaining?

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

August 18th 2006 06:20
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" is the first track and first single from Nirvana's 1991 album Nevermind, and is commonly regarded as the song that brought Nirvana and grunge music to the attention of the world. Many consider Smells Like Teen Spirit to be the anthem of the nineties, even, the anthem of a generation. It is also widely considered the definitive Grunge song, and its raging popularity opened the gates for countless other bands of this genre such as Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. It reached #1 for many weeks on charts around the world.
In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked "Smells Like Teen Spirit" ninth in its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 2002, the song was featured in an episode of the SBS documentary series, Impact: Songs That Changed The World.

The music video itself, directed by Samuel Bayer, who would later go on to direct videos for such notable rock acts as Green Day, is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the Most Played Video on MTV Europe.

The demolishing of the set captured in the video was essentially uncontrolled. The extras that filled the bleachers had been forced to stay seated for the entire afternoon of filming, and had sat through uncountable replays of the song. By the time Bayer turned them loose, the set became a scene of chaos.

She is a former member of Wild Orchid and current vocalist of the The Black Eyed Peas. She is currently pursuing a solo career and will release her first solo album, The Dutchess, in September. Nick Lachey - What's Left of Me

August 15th 2006 07:29
Nicholas Scott Lachey (born November 9, 1973, in Harlan, Kentucky), rose to fame in the mid-1990s as a writer and joint lead vocalist along with founding member Jeff Timmons of the band 98 Degrees. They have sold over 10 million records worldwide and charted no less than 8 top 40 singles.

Nick Lachey married fellow pop star Jessica Simpson in October 2002. The pair had dated for four years, however they had a five month break up, but remained in contact. They had both had a series of failures in the music industry: Lachey faded off the map after 98 Degrees, and Simpson had low sales in both albums Irresistible and In This Skin. They needed some heavy promotion to push their careers further and Jessica's father, Joe Simpson, had the idea for a reality show that followed the superstars' newly married life together.

Newlyweds premiered on MTV in August of 2003 to a huge amount of viewers and recognition. The outrageous quotes, hilarious lifestyle, and mega-spending of the young couple made Newlyweds a phenomenon. Many famous moments included Simpson confusing tuna and chicken, and thinking that buffalos had wings. The couple was sprung straight back into the spotlight. Upon the success of the duo, Simpson re-released her album In This Skin. It quickly became a hit, reaching triple platinum status.

In November 2003 Nick released his first Solo album "SoulO". The album was a failure but did contain "This I Swear", the theme song from Newlyweds.

His second solo album released in May this year is "What's Left of Me", only the title track has been released so far, but it has been more successful, reaching #6 in the US and currently sitting at #7 in Australia.
The lyrics to What's Left of Me are supposedly about his divorce, in the music video, Vanessa Minnillo, the MTV VJ and TV Personality, plays Jessica's role, showcasing the last days of the couple's relationship.

Beyoncé feat. Jay Z - Déjà Vu

August 10th 2006 07:07
Beyoncé Giselle Knowles, best known by the name Beyoncé, rose to stardom as a member of Destiny's Child, music's most successful female trio.
Since going solo in 2003 she has only released one album "Dangerously in Love", which was largely successful selling 317,000 copies in the first week alone, and containing the No. 1 hits "Crazy in Love" and "Baby Boy".
In 2005 she also recorded "Check on It" for Destiny's Child's greatest hits album, "#1's" which also made No. 1 in the US. Beyoncé did record another album, "Speak My Mind" in 2005. It was leaked but never officially released. It's possible she has just shelved it for later.
There is an interesting story behind Check on It, the song was not originally intended for release as a single from #1's, but it was played by radio stations instead of the first single, "Stand Up for Love" (recorded by all three members of Destiny's Child), which became a commercial failure. Beyoncé shot a music video for the song after demand for it grew.

Check on It, is also featured on her second album "B'Day" , which is due for release on September 4th. This happens to be Beyoncés' 25th birthday, which could possibly be where the name for the album came from.
The first single from B'Day is "Déjà Vu", featuring Jay-Z, the two of them have been "collaborating" since 2002. Déjà Vu has been released in the US and is currently at No. 4, it will be released to the rest of the world over the next week or two.
During the making of the music video for "Déjà Vu", Beyoncé revealed that she "decided to go to Louisiana because it has a soul that a studio can't give you. We were in the swamps. Literally, there were alligators, snakes, bees, and wasps. It was 105 degrees. All of that sweat in the video is real. That's not some spritzer. That's real."

The video has been criticised by fans. There is an online petition made by Beyoncé fans to get her to re-shoot the video because they feel that it has no particular storyline and is of a lower standard than her past videos. You can view the petition here, or decide for yourself below.

Tupac Shakur - California Love

August 9th 2006 07:47
Tupac Amaru Shakur (June 16, 1971 – September 13, 1996), also known by his stage names 2Pac and Makaveli, was an American hip hop artist, poet and actor. He is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the best-selling rap/hip-hop artist ever, having sold over 73 million albums worldwide, he is consistently ranked by fans, critics and industry insiders as the greatest rapper ever.
As he garnered fame as a rapper and actor, Shakur gained notoriety for his conflicts with the law. On October of 1991 he filed a $10 million lawsuit against the Oakland Police Department, alleging they brutally beat him over a jaywalking incident. The suit was later settled outside court.

In October 1993, in Atlanta, Shakur shot two off-duty police officers (one in the leg, one in the buttocks) that were harassing a black motorist. Charges against Shakur were dismissed when it was discovered that both officers were intoxicated and were in possession of stolen weapons from an evidence locker during the incident.

In December 1993, Shakur was charged with sexually abusing a woman in his hotel room. On the night of November 30, 1994, the day before the verdict in his sexual abuse trial was to be announced, Shakur was shot five times in the lobby of the Quad Recording Studios in Manhattan by two black men in an apparent robbery attempt. He would later accuse Puff Daddy and Notorious B.I.G. - whom he saw after the shooting - of setting him up. The day following the incident, December 1, 1994, Shakur entered the courthouse in a wheelchair and was found guilty of three counts of sexual abuse, but innocent of six others.

Shakur began serving his prison sentence at Clinton Correctional Facility in February 1995. Shortly afterwards, he released his multi-platinum album Me Against the World. Shakur is the only artist ever to have an album at number one on the charts while serving a prison sentence.
After his release from prison, Shakur immediately went back to work recording. He began a new group, The Outlawz, he also aligned himself with Death Row Records.

On September 7, 1996, Shakur attended the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon boxing match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. After the boxing match, Shakur spotted 21 year-old Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson, a member of the Southside Crips in the MGM Grand lobby. Shakur rushed him and knocked Anderson down, and Shakur's entourage beat him. The incident was captured on the hotel's video surveillance. Anderson and a group of Crips had beaten up a member of Death Row's entourage in a Foot Locker a few weeks earlier, precipitating Shakur's attack. After the fight with Anderson, Shakur met up with Suge Knight to go to Death Row-owned Club 662 (now known as restaurant/club Seven). Shakur rode with Knight in Knight's 1996 black BMW 750i sedan, as part of a larger convoy of cars including some of Shakur's friends, The Outlawz, and bodyguards.
At 11:14 P.M., while stopped at the intersection of East Flamingo Road and Koval Lane, Shakur was shot in a drive-by shooting. Shakur was hit four times, twice in the chest, and once each in his arm and thigh, while Knight was scratched in the head by a piece of flying glass. He died in hospital 6 days later.

Although no one has ever been formally charged, nor publicly identified by the police as a suspect, police sources have indicated they believe that Anderson (who has since been murdered himself) was the killer.
2Pac has had 5 albums released posthumously, the last one being "Loyal to the Game" in 2004.

"California Love" was released as Shakur's comeback single upon his release from prison in 1995. A popular remix version of the song appeared on his 1996 double album All Eyez on Me. It was nominated for a posthumous Grammy Award as a Best Rap Performance. The song sold 2 million copies and was #1 in the US, #4 in Australia and #6 in the UK.
This version of the music video appears to have been inspired by the film Mad Max 3, and takes place in a desert. The casting includes actor Chris Tucker playing the evil tribal chief's yes-man, and Roger Troutman (from with the band Zapp, the original writers of the song) carrying a talk box. The shooting takes place in the Thunderdome set known from the movie. It ends with a cliffhanger cut by a "To be continued closing" text.

Michael Jackson - Thriller

August 4th 2006 06:34
Michael Jackson's Thriller album, released in December 1982, is the world's all-time best selling album, with estimated sales over 51 million sales in the Guinness Book of Records. The title track was the 7th single off the album, and itself reached #4 in the US. The song is perhaps best known for its music video, which is often hailed as the best and most popular music video of all time. "Thriller", in essence, redefined the concept of music videos. It was the most expensive video of its time, costing $800,000 — the equivalent of $1.4 million today.
"Thriller" was less of a conventional video and more of a full-fledged short subject or mini-film; a horror film spoof featuring choreographed zombies performing with Jackson.

Weird Al Yankovic - Amish Paradise

August 1st 2006 05:09
"Amish Paradise" is "Weird Al" Yankovic's parody of the hip hop song "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio. It turns the original "Gangsta's Paradise," in which the narrator laments his dangerous way of life, on its head by presenting an Amish man praising his relatively tedious and unsophisticated existence.
Although Yankovic traditionally secures permission from the artists he parodies (even though this is not legally required), and was told by his record label that Coolio had given permission, Coolio later claimed that he had not given such permission. This created a minor controversy, as speculation surfaced that Coolio had actually given permission but later claimed he hadn't in the fear that allowing the parody wouldn't be seen as "cool," or that Yankovic's record label lied to Yankovic in the hopes that the song would become popular. Yankovic later stated that he had written a sincere letter of apology to Coolio which was never returned, and that Coolio never complained when he received his royalty check from proceeds of the song.

Below is the video for the original Gangsta's Paradise from 1995, which was off the Dangerous Minds soundtrack and is the song Coolio is most famous for.
