Music Videos - October 2006

"The Saints are Coming" is a song by the Scottish punk rock band The Skids, off their debut album Scared to Dance from 1978. The song featured Richard Jobson singing of a man facing inclement weather and personal fears. It reached number 48 in the UK Singles Chart.

The song's lyrics about storms and drowning came back to light after the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. In September 2006 it was announced that Green Day and U2 were to record a cover version of the song for charitable purposes.

To coincide with the joint U2/Green Day recording of "The Saints are Coming", both bands performed a live version of the song during the Monday Night Football Pregame show of the New Orleans Saints - Atlanta Falcons game on Monday night September 25, 2006. This was to be the first game in the Louisiana Superdome since it was heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina .

In the four song set, U2 and Green Day performed "Wake Me Up When September Ends" followed by a medley of The Animals' "House Of The Rising Sun", The Skids' "The Saints are Coming" and U2's "Beautiful Day".
The video of this performance is below.

A music video for "The Saints are Coming," directed by Chris Milk, was released on YouTube on October 27, 2006. The video which you can watch below, has been receiving half a million views a day.

Men at Work - Land Down Under

October 30th 2006 04:09
"Down Under" is a New Wave song of the reggae flavour, written in 1982 by the Australian rock group Men at Work, from their debut album "Business as Usual."

The song is a perennial favourite on Australian radio and television and has become a patriotic song because of its lyrics about an Australian traveller circling the globe, proud of his nationality and attracting the interest of others because of that.

Down Under also became well-known outside Australia, after it was used as a theme song by the crew of Australia II in their successful bid to win the America's Cup in 1983. It became the first Australian single to make it to #1 in the US, beating the previous best of "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" which made it to #3 in 1963. It also made #1 in the UK.
Business as Usual also set a record for the most weeks for a debut album at No. 1 in the U.S. charts.

Recently Down Under was voted #1 on the "Essential 2006 Countdown" on Triple M radio in Australia.

Cold Chisel

October 27th 2006 04:42
Formed in Adelaide in 1973, Cold Chisel produced the canonical example of Australian pub rock, with a string of hits throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and they are acknowledged as one of the most popular and successful Australian groups of the period, although this success and acclaim was almost completely restricted to Australia.

Cold Chisel's 1978 classic "Khe Sanh" (often spelt Khe Sahn) is one of the most popular songs ever recorded by an Australian act and one generally seen as a resonant symbol of Australian culture. Named after the Battle of Khe Sanh (1968), during the Vietnam War. The song, written by pianist Don Walker, is about a bitter and disillusioned Australian Vietnam veteran.

"Flame Trees" is from Cold Chisel's 1984 album "Twentieth Century". Along with "Saturday Night" (also from Twentieth Century), "Bow River" (from Circus Animals) and Khe Sanh, Flame Trees is considered one of the best Cold Chisel songs. It was written by Steve Prestwich and Don Walker.

The final music video is from Saturday Night.

By 1983 Cold Chisel had reached the zenith of their career in Australia and with overseas markets reluctant to accept them, the band began to disintegrate.

Throughout the 80s and most of the 90s, the band was courted to re-form but obstinately refused. Eventually, however, Cold Chisel got back together in 1999 for a new CD release, titled "The Last Wave of Summer".

Band members:

• Jimmy Barnes (lead vocals / guitar)
• Ian Moss (lead guitar / vocals)
• Don Walker (keyboards)
• Steve Prestwich (drums)
• Phil Small (bass guitar)

Bob Sinclar (real name Christophe LeFriant, born 1967) is a French record producer, DJ, remixer and owner of the label Yellow Productions.

Sinclar started DJing in 1986, when he was just 18 years old, specializing in funk and hip-hop music. In 2005 he scored a hit with the single "Love Generation", that reached #1 on the Australian ARIA Singles Charts and the German Media Control Single Charts in 2006. The song was also a huge success throughout Europe. The followup hit was "World, Hold On", that features Steve Edwards and also managed to chart in the top ten in most of the European countries.

His latest hit is called "Rock This Party (Everybody Dance Now)". The song samples the massive 1990s hit "Gonna Make You Sweat", by C C Music Factory featuring Freedom Williams and was released as the third major single off the Western Dream album.

The music video below features David Beaudouin, the same boy from the Love Generation and World, Hold On videos. In this video, the boy "performs" the song (with two young girls) as 50 Cent and Red Hot Chili Peppers, along with other stylised performances as John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, The Beatles and ACDC.

My Chemical Romance (MCR) is an American band from New Jersey. Formed in 2001, the band consists of Gerard Way (lead vocals), Mikey Way (bass), Bob Bryar (drums), Frank Iero (rhythm guitar), and Ray Toro (lead guitar).
The band has been described variously by the media as "emo", "indie", "pop punk" and "post-hardcore". The band themselves have described their music as simply "rock" or "violent, dangerous pop", as well as rejecting the term "emo" to describe their style.

My Chemical Romance was initially lauded as a band with a strong "grassroots" or "cult" following. It was among the first bands to achieve prominence by offering free downloads through PureVolume and the "social networking" site MySpace. Their debut album in 2002 I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love never made an impact on the charts. However, in 2004 their second album Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge greatly increased their fan base with the top 40 hits I'm Not Okay (I Promise), Helena and The Ghost Of You. Due to the increased amount of new fans, some of the old fanbase considered the band a "sellout" and the new fans as "teeny boppers" and "posers".

Yesterday in the UK and today in the US sees the release of MCR's third album The Black Parade. Like the band's first two albums, it is a concept album, centring around a character known as "the Patient," who suffers an untimely death at a young age due to cancer. The album is produced by Rob Cavallo, who has also produced a large number of Green Day's albums.
The first single from the album is Welcome to the Black Parade. The song's story is the Patient dying, and death comes for him as a Black Parade since his most significant memory was of his father taking him to see a marching band as a child. It has been MCR's most successful single to date and their first #1 in any country reaching the top of the UK charts. Last week it debuted at #13 in Australia. The music video is below.

Discothèque was the lead single from U2's 1997 album, Pop. It showcases an attempt at techno music. In the music video below which was directed by Stephane Sednaoui, the four rockers are dressed up in Village People costumes. The song was a worldwide success, making #1 in many countries including the UK.

The lead single from How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb was Vertigo. It too was a worldwide hit, making #1 in the UK and #5 in Australia. It won 'Best Rock Song', 'Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal' and 'Best Short Form Music Video' at the 2005 Grammy awards.

David Hasselhoff - Jump in my Car

October 19th 2006 06:42
David Michael Hasselhoff a.k.a. "The Hoff" (born July 17, 1952 in Baltimore, Maryland) is an American actor, singer and songwriter who is best known for his lead roles on Knight Rider and Baywatch. He has also crossed over to a successful music career, primarily in Austria, Switzerland, and Germany.

In recent times The Hoff has become an internet cult phenomenon. In April this year anonymous fans of David Hasselhoff launched a tongue-in-cheek website "Get Hasselhoff to Number 1" in an attempt to generate the momentum required to send the 1989 hit "Looking for Freedom" to the top of the UK music charts based on Internet downloads of the single. The idea was when the total number of sign-ups on the site reached 75,000 the owners of the site would send a "Hoff Alert" email to all those who have registered alerting them that the time has come to purchase the single. The intention is that the surge in sales generated will propel the former hit to the top spot in the British charts.
However, in September The Hoff announced he would be releasing a new single called "Jump in My Car". The website then switched the single it was promoting from "Looking for Freedom" to "Jump in My Car".

Jump in my Car was released in the UK on October 2nd, by this time only 40,000 people had signed up to the website, nonetheless the Hoff Alert was sent out the following day and 26,000 copies of the single were sold. This propelled the single to #3 on the charts, oh so close to the goal of #1. Although the goal wasn't quite reached, Hasselhoff did gain his highest ever UK chart entry. The single also made #50 in Australia, and in the UK it is hanging in there at #10.
Interestingly, the song was written by Australian singer, Ted Mulry and was first a hit for the band, Ted Mulry Gang, in Australia in 1975.

The music video is below, as you will see it is basically The Hoff making fun of himself.

Weird Al Yankovic - White & Nerdy

October 18th 2006 07:24
Straight Outta Lynwood is the 12th album by "Weird Al" Yankovic. It was released on September 26, 2006 in the US by Volcano Records, on September 30, 2006 in Australia, on October 3 in Canada, and on October 6, 2006 in New Zealand.

Straight Outta Lynwood has become Yankovic's most successful chart album in the U.S, and his first top ten album ever, entering the Billboard 200 at number ten."White & Nerdy" has also become Yankovic's first-ever Top 10 single, currently sitting at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100. (His previous highest-peaking single was 1984's "Eat It", which peaked at #12).

White & Nerdy is a parody of the song "Ridin'" by Chamillionaire and Krayzie Bone. The song is a lamentation by the subject over his inability to "roll with the gangstas" because he is "just too white and nerdy", and includes references to concepts stereotypically associated with nerds, such as collecting Star Trek memorobilia, editing Wikipedia, playing Dungeons & Dragons, being proficient in the use of Internet slang and computer science, being a fan of Monty Python, and being proficient in mathematics.

The music video is below, the video was unique in that Yankovic personally recruited extras to participate in its filming. A request was posted via the blog on his MySpace page, and he received interest from a number of extras who were willing to work for free.

Next is the music video for the original, "Ridin'" by Chamillionaire and Krayzie Bone.

The Free Hugs Campaign appears to have begun in 2004, and was widely publicized in 2006 by the music video below. It involves individuals who offer hugs to strangers in public settings. The campaign is an example of a random act of kindness a selfless act performed by someone, for the sole reason of making others feel better.

This video was released on YouTube on September 22, 2006, and within two weeks had gained over two million views. According to the video summary, it was recorded in Sydney, Australia. In the video, the main character who is giving out hugs, (identified as "Juan Mann", a pseudonym), walks through the Pitt Street Mall in Sydney holding up a sign with the words "FREE HUGS" written on it. Music for the video is provided by the Sick Puppies, an Australian band that "Mann" met a year earlier. Shimon Moore, the lead singer of the Sick Puppies who worked at the mall, shot the footage which he later compiled into a video for the song.

In the video initial distrust of his motivations gives way to a gradual accretion of people willing to be hugged, and other huggers (male and female) to help distribute them. After some time, security guards, then police seem to tell them that they must stop, as Mann has not obtained public liability insurance for his actions. Mann and his companions then begin a petition which reaches 10,000 signatures. At that point the security guards walk away, but not before being hugged by some of the participants.

The Sick Puppies are an indie rock band from Sydney, Australia. The band was formed by singer/lead guitarist Shimon Moore and bassist Emma Anzai in the music room of Mosman High School in 1997. Shimon Moore and Emma Anzai are also occassional actors. Both have been featured on Australian TV Series All Saints. The band started attracting national attention when their song Nothing Really Matters won Triple J's Unearthed in 2001.

The Beatles

October 13th 2006 07:14
The Beatles, comprising John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr were an English rock group from Liverpool. They are the most commercially successful musical group of all time, and the most critically acclaimed. They continue to be held in the highest esteem for their artistic achievements, commercial success, and influence on early rock and roll and pop music. Although their initial musical style was rooted in the sounds of 1950s Rock & Roll, the group explored a great variety of musical styles, such as rockabilly, folk, psychedelic, and Indian music. The Beatles' impact extended well beyond their music. Their clothes, hairstyles, statements, and even their choice of instruments made them trend-setters throughout the 1960s. Their growing social awareness –– reflected in the development of their music –– saw their influence extend into the social and cultural revolutions of the 1960s.

To date, The Beatles have sold more albums than any other band in history. In the United Kingdom, they released more than 40 different singles, albums and EPs that reached number one. This commercial success was repeated in many other countries: EMI estimated that by 1985, the band had sold over one billion discs or tapes worldwide. The RIAA has certified The Beatles as the top selling artists of all time in America based on U.S. sales of singles and albums. According to EMI and the Guinness Book of Records, The Beatles have sold in excess of 1,010,000,000 units (including cassettes, records, CDs, bootlegs). The only other artist to come close is Elvis Presley, with a similar number.

"She Loves You" is The Beatles best selling single in the UK, it was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The single set and surpassed several records in the United Kingdom charts, and set a record in the United States by being one of the five Beatles' songs which held the top five positions in the charts at the same time, a record which is still unchallenged. The five songs were #1 - "Can't Buy Me Love," #2 - "Twist and Shout," #3 - "She Loves You," #4 - "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and #5 - "Please Please Me." Below are The Beatles performing "She Loves You".

The Bealtes best selling single in the USA was the ballad "Hey Jude" which was written by Paul McCartney. The song, originally titled "Hey Jules", was written by McCartney to comfort John Lennon's son Julian when John Lennon and his first wife, Cynthia Powell, were divorced. It is quite long at over 7 minutes, and you can see The Beatles performing it below.

Interestingly, neither of the above singles is The Beatles' best-selling single world wide, that record is held by "I Want to Hold Your Hand". It was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and led the British Invasion of the United States music charts.

"But It's Better If You Do" is the third single by alternative rock band Panic! at the Disco, from the album A Fever You Can't Sweat Out (2005). It was released on May 4, 2006 and written by lead guitarist Ryan Ross. So far it has peaked at #81 on the US charts, but it faired better in Australia debuting at #17 last week.
The title is a quote from the movie Closer. In the movie, Natalie Portman says, "Lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off- but it's better if you do." "Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off" is another song on A Fever You Can't Sweat Out.

Ryan Ross said of the song, "It's a song about being in a strip club but not actually liking being in there. So I wanted it to be about the sort of complex inner-monologue," he said. "It's not completely fiction, though. It's based on a scenario when I was going through a breakup with a girl, and I was in one of these clubs but wishing I didn't have to be. Because in reality, I don't like strip clubs. I think they're kind of ecch".

The music video begins with a black and white introduction of the band's lead singer, Brendon Urie, arguing with a woman, presumably his girlfriend. She is worried that he will go to an "illegal strip club." He denies it, and ends up going anyway.

The music video continues with the song in the overview of the strip joint. There Urie sees a woman who seems to be unusually interested in him. They retreat to a private room. The two begin to kiss, and Urie removes his mask. The woman likewise removes her mask to reveal that she was in fact his girlfriend, who had apparently followed him to the "illegal strip club." A quick slap to Urie's face and his girlfriend turns to leave. As she gains headway, however, the police bust into the club and arrest her. Urie brawls with the chief, but is apprehended. They both are put into a police car, smile menacingly at one and another, and the scene fades.

The Offspring - Self Esteem

October 6th 2006 06:25
The Offspring is a popular American band from Orange County, California that was originally formed in 1984. The band now consists of vocalist and rhythm guitarist Dexter Holland, lead guitarist Kevin 'Noodles' Wasserman, bassist Greg Kriesel (known as Greg K), and Atom Willard on drums. They have sold over 32 million albums worldwide. While The Offspring is often primarily considered a punk rock or alternative rock group, their music contains strong elements of grunge, heavy metal, and occasionally ska.

Released on April 19, 1994, "Smash" was The Offspring's third album and it broke them into the main stream. Fuelled by the hit singles: "Come Out and Play," "Self Esteem," and, "Gotta Get Away," Smash sold more than 11 million copies world wide and it remains the highest selling independent album of all time.

Although never making #1 in the US, Self Esteem has possibly remained The Offspring’s most popular song amongst fans. Fuelled with raw energy, the lyrics are about a relationship in which the girl takes advantage of her boyfriend, as he has "no self-esteem." The music video was played repeatedly on MTV in Europe, creating the bands popularity there.

Jibbs - Chain Hang Low

October 4th 2006 08:01
Jovan Kampbell (born November 13, 1990 in St. Louis, Missouri) also known as Jibbs is an American rapper best known for his hit single "Chain Hang Low", which is currently at #8 on the US charts. He is also the younger brother of DJ Beats. His debut album, "Jibbs feat. Jibbs" will be released this month.

Jibbs began rapping at an early age in an effort to impress his older brother, DJ Beats (who was gaining a reputation locally producing tracks for Nelly and Chingy). By the age of 11 he was rapping up older broads who were at least twice his age. The results so impressed his brother that he invited Jibbs into the studio to record tracks which would become popular on the local circuit. He first started out as a member of The Little Louies, then struck on his own. The tracks started to spread outside St. Louis and found themselves in the hands of industry executives, which resulted in Jibbs opening for several superstars when they performed locally. He later signed to Geffen Records.

The music video for Chain Hang Low is below. The melody of this hip-hop song is done to and old minstrel show song called the "The Turkey in the Straw".
