Beyoncé - Baby Boy

November 23rd 2006 05:34
"Baby Boy" is the second single from Beyoncé's debut album Dangerously in Love. Released in 2003, the song (which features dancehall singer Sean Paul) reached number one in the U.S., becoming Beyoncé's second number-one single and Sean Paul's second; it also reached number two in the UK. In this Middle Eastern/reggae hybrid, Beyoncé becomes enraptured by the thought of a man who haunts her, yet turns her on, as she cries "Baby Boy, you stay on my mind, fulfil my fantasies...".

The music video which you can see below, is still very popular. It does not have a central plot, but is better-known for its visual interpretation of Beyoncé's wild dreams and fantasies of her "Baby Boy".

Rihanna - We Ride

November 20th 2006 07:01
Rihanna's debut album Music of the Sun, which she co-wrote, was released in August 2005, led by the single "Pon de Replay", which peaked at number two on both the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. The second single, "If It's Lovin' That You Want", was less successful than its predecessor but reached the top twenty in several countries. The album itself peaked within the top ten in Canada, and the U.S., and within the top forty in the UK.

She released her second album, A Girl Like Me, in April 2006 less than eight months after the release of her debut album. The album debuted at number five in the U.S. and number six in the UK. The lead single, "SOS", was used in her endorsement deal with Nike. The song became Rihanna's first number one on the Hot 100 chart; it also debuted at number one on the Hot Digital Songs chart where it became the second biggest first week digital single ever. "SOS" peaked at number one in Australia and number two in the UK. The second single, a slow ballad which addresses the feelings of guilt a girl faces as she cheats on her boyfriend titled "Unfaithful", became her third top ten hit in the U.S and UK.

"We Ride" is the third single from A Girl Like Me. Rihanna says that, "It's her favorite song on the album." She also says that she chose this song because it was her most downloaded song on iTunes other than "SOS" and "Unfaithful". In the US We Ride did not fair very well, failing to make the top 100. In the UK and Australia it has performed better, reaching the top 20 in both countries. The music video is below.

Fergie - Fergalicious

November 17th 2006 08:08
"Fergalicious" is the second single from Fergie's album The Dutchess. It entered the Billboard Hot 100 at #79, ascending to #3 several weeks later. This is Fergie's second top 5 US single in a row.

Many consider this song to be a big novelty song, similar to that of the Black Eyed Peas' single "My Humps" (2005). In the song, Fergie describes how her body makes the boys go crazy for her. Thus, the definition 'Fergalicious' is created to describe her sex appeal.

The music video was directed by Fatima Robinson who also shot My Humps music video. It features Fergie in a Willy Wonka inspired factory, called "Fergieland" filled with various types of candy. You can view it below.

Beyoncé - Irreplaceable

November 15th 2006 02:06
B'Day is the second studio album by Beyoncé, it was released in early September.
The album debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 with first week sales of 541,196 copies, and at number one on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart. It sold over 200,000 copies more than her first album Dangerously In Love. Knowles has the highest first week sales of an album released in 2006 by a female artist, the fourth highest first week sales of 2006 after Rascal Flatts' Me And My Gang, which sold 722,000 copies in April, Justin Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveSounds (a week later) with first week sales over 684,000, and Tool's 10,000 Days, which sold 564,000 copies in May. The album has already been certified platinum (1 million copies shipped) by the RIAA.

Lyrically the song is from the viewpoint of a woman who is dismissing a cheating lover, assuring him that he is not irreplaceable, and that she can quickly "have another you in a minute." The song is notable for its unique sound with acoustic guitars prominent in the mix.

The music video for Irreplaceable is a simple story where Beyoncé's boyfriend is packing his belongings and leaving her house. Between cuts, we see her dancing, looking at herself in the mirror wearing only her lingerie and lipstick singing with her band and having fun.

Christina Aguilera - Hurt

November 14th 2006 05:20
Christina Aguilera has transformed her image and musical style with every album. With the new Back to Basics album, her musical style has changed from the urban and light rock sounds of Stripped to a soulful and jazz-inspired album. The second single from Back to Basics is "Hurt" which was written by Christina Aguilera, Linda Perry and Mark Ronson. The song's lyrical content describes how one deals with the loss of a loved one, and it has received praise from pop music critics.

Bon Jovi

November 10th 2006 03:39
Bon Jovi is an influential rock band from New Jersey, USA. Fronted by lead singer and namesake Jon Bon Jovi, the group originally achieved large-scale success in the 1980s as a metal band. The band members are Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, David Bryan, Tico Torres and Hugh McDonald

However, Bon Jovi has proved far more durable than most groups so labelled, blending elements of hard rock, heartland rock, and the "MTV Unplugged" style together to sustain a commercially successful career well into the 2000s.
Bon Jovi has sold more than 35 million albums in the United States, and over 120 million albums worldwide.

Bon Jovi's third and most commercially successful album "Slippery When Wet" was released in 1986. It has sold over 12 million copies in the U.S. alone. Today it stands as one of the six best selling hard rock / heavy metal albums ever, and spawned two #1 singles, "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "Livin' on a Prayer". The third single "Wanted Dead or Alive" was a Top 10 hit, reaching #7 .
Livin' on a Prayer is Bon Jovi's most famous and signature song.

Bon Jovi's fifth album "Keep the Faith" was released in November 1992. After the fourth album "New Jersey" all the members of the band were venturing into different areas. Jon wrote and recorded "Blaze Of Glory" for the Young Guns II soundtrack and the song was a massive hit. Richie also recorded his solo album, "Stranger in This Town" and David released his album of classical piano tracks. All these events sparked rumours that the band was breaking up.
Keep The Faith topped the European, UK and Australian album charts. It was the best-selling album in Canada and Europe of 1993. "Bed of Roses" was a ballad released off Keep the Faith. As a single it ranked #10 in the U.S. and Australia, and #13 in the U.K.. It is a song now considered by many fans to be a classic.

Bon Jovi's seventh studio album, "Crush", was released on June 13, 2000. Bon Jovi had always been a critical favourite, they had been consistent best-sellers around the globe. Crush re-established this reputation, with typical catchy choruses and anthemic, metal riffs. "It's My Life" was particularly ubiquitous in the United States and UK
Approximate sales were in excess of two million copies, making the album double platinum in the USA and with sales equalling 9 million copies world wide, making it a best seller.

"It's My Life" became the most successful Bon Jovi single, hitting #1 across many countries and most importantly, becoming a symbol of band's longevity as they prevailed through many different changes in the mainstream rock scene with admirable success. It was credited with reviving their career after they came off a five year break, during which they each pursued individual solo careers. It was also credited with introducing the veteran band to an entirely new, younger audience.
"It's My Life" charted at #3 in the United Kingdom, #5 in Australia and #13 in Canada. The song was also immensely popular in Germany, where Bon Jovi already had an immense fan base. The music video proved just as popular. It is below.

"It's All Coming Back to Me Now" is a power ballad written by Jim Steinman in 1983. Inspired by Wuthering Heights, Steinman attempted to write "the most passionate, romantic song" he could ever write.

Although it was intended for Bat out of Hell II and given to Meat Loaf in 1986, Steinman and Meat Loaf decided to use "I'd Do Anything for Love (but I Won't Do That)" for Bat 2 and save this song for Bat III.

It has had three major releases, all roughly belonging to the soft rock genre. The first version appeared on the Pandora's Box concept album Original Sin. It was then recorded by Celine Dion for her Falling Into You album. Dion's version was a commercial hit, reaching #2 in the US Billboard Hot 100 and #3 in the UK singles chart. Meat Loaf's version, a duet with Norwegian singer Marion Raven, released in October 2006, entered the UK singles chart at number 6.

Marion Raven was chosen for Meat Loaf's version because the timbre of her voice starkly contrasts to Meat Loaf's. In promotional interviews, Meat Loaf said that "I believe that the version that Marion Raven and myself did on this album is the definitive version." The music video for this version is below. It was directed by P. R. Brown.

David Bowie

November 3rd 2006 03:01
David Bowie (born David Robert Jones on January 8, 1947) is an English singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, arranger and audio engineer, whose work spans more than four decades. An occasionally camp figure, he is recognised as one of the more accomplished and inspired artists in popular music. Throughout the 1970s he took cues from art, philosophy and literature and appeared to elevate pop and rock to a more sophisticated level. He is also a film and stage actor, music video director and visual artist.

Bowie first caught the eye and ear of the public in the autumn of 1969, when his space-age mini-melodrama "Space Oddity" reached the top five of the UK singles chart. The song was reissued in 1975 where it reached #1 in the UK. It is about the launch of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut who mysteriously becomes lost in Outer Space.

In 1975 Bowie achieved his first major American crossover success with the number-one single "Fame" and the hit album Young Americans. While staying in New York Bowie met John Lennon. The pair socialised and jammed together, which led to a one-day session at The Power Plant studio in January 1975. Firstly a cover of The Beatles’ "Across the Universe" was recorded, then a new song called "Fame". Despite having only a minor contribution, Lennon was given a co-writing credit.

After uneven commercial success in the late 1970s, in 1980 Bowie had a UK number one "Ashes to Ashes" and its parent album, Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps). He paired with Queen for the 1981 UK chart-topper "Under Pressure", but consolidated his commercial – and, until then, most profitable – sound in 1983 with the album Let's Dance, which yielded the hit singles "China Girl", "Modern Love" and, most famously, the title track.
Heavily influenced by producer Nile Rodgers’ work with his band CHIC, “Let’s Dance" features a thumping bassline, combined with Stevie Ray Vaughan’s guitar playing.
The music video, made with David Mallet on location in Australia, features Bowie watching an Aboriginal couple’s struggles against metaphors of Western cultural imperialism impassively while playing with his band.

Since the mid-80s only a handful of Bowie’s recordings have entered public consciousness. In the British Broadcasting Corporation's 2002 poll of the 100 Greatest Britons, Bowie ranked 29. Throughout his career he has sold an estimated 136 million albums, and ranks among the ten best-selling acts in UK pop history.

James Morrison (born James Morrison Catchpole in 1984) is a singer/songwriter from Rugby, Warwickshire, England. He says that his musical influences include Al Green, Otis Redding, Cat Stevens and the Kinks.

At 13 Morrison began to learn guitar when his uncle showed him how to play a blues riff. He started busking when he lived at Porth near Newquay, in Cornwall. After years of playing other musicians' songs, he eventually started to write his own. Polydor Productions signed him and he was the supporting artist for Corinne Bailey Rae on her tour supporting her debut album.

Morrison released his first album, Undiscovered on July 31st, 2006, and it topped the UK album charts in its first week of release.

Morrison's debut single off Undiscoverd is You Give Me Something. It made #5 in the UK, #1 in New Zealand and debuted at #8 on the Australian charts last week. Morrison says the song was intended to be a 'harsh love song', and the lyrics mean that the protagonist of the song does not love the person as much as she loves him, but is willing to give the relationship a try.
