Music Videos - October 2008

Another great clip by dutch master Anton Corbijn - here he teams with one of his long time collaborators - British indie electro pop outfit Depeche Mode. Classic Corbijn - black and white shot on a super 8 camera for that gritty realism. Enjoy

With links to electro rockers Daft Punk this french dance group have put in a decisively catchy effort in D.A.N.C.E. And it features this wonderful clip where the cool t-shirt of the band members get fully animated in the most fun way possible. A great visual pop art clip. Enjoy!!

This was one of the biggest songs of 2007 and is catchy to the point of being now annoying. A great piece of pop song writing and capped off with a featuring performance from rapper JayZ. Rihanna made herself into a houseold name with this song and music video and struck a deal with covergirl cosmetics to take the music - fashion - commercialisation thing to a new level. Here it is!

This is a cover of the Skids 1978 classic song. It teams two of rocks biggest bands and the message here is undoubtedly political as it becomes a reference to th plight of the people of New Orleans after hurricane Katrina. Directed by the talented Chris Milk it uses both concert and file footage - here it is!

What started off as an avant garde punk art school band turned into one of the world's most loved rock acts. This great song is produced by the legendary Brian Eno and his flourishes can be heard. The clip is almost performance art with Byrne at his best with choreography by Toni Basil (of 'Mickey' fame). Enjoy.

Madonna sealed her status as an icon with this clip which pays homage to that other legendary Hollywood icon Marilyn Munroe. The clip directed by long time collaborator Mary Lambert recreates the famous scene from the film The Seven Year Itch where Marliyn Munroe sings and dances to the song Diamonds are a Girl's best friend which works wonderfully well with Madonna's lyrics for material girl. Also features a cameo by the actor Keith Carradine. It's a great clip.

Great song which came to prominence with an acoustic cover of it by Jose Gonzales. The original by swedish electronic outfit The Knife is playful and has this simple but wicked little clip from Johannes Nyholm. Very cool - check it out.

The Kahn Spears combination continue to give us great music videos - they worked on 'Toxic' together and have come up trumps again with this clip for the song Womanizer. Kahn seems to know how to best handle Spears and makes her look amazing (like Billy Wilder with Marilyn Monroe). Here is the clip for Womanizer - Enjoy!

52. Behind Blue Eyes - Limp Bizkit

October 25th 2008 11:03

This is a travesty on every level - first it is nowhere near as good as the original by legendary English Rock band The Who. Second it features the idiot lead singer Fred Durst getting it on with the bautiful Halle Berry. I don't know why I am posting it frankly (though it had more than 2,000,000 hits on YouTube??) Go figure

Terence Donovan was a 1960's fashion photographer in London - for Robert Palmer's famous film clip he used a team of models and dressed them exactly the same way with the same hair and make up to be members of Palmer's backing band. Their bland facial expressions resemble the work of painter Patrick Nagel and this clip is most dfinitely one of the iconic music videos of the 1980's and a moment where fashion and music . Kate Perry is definitely more hot than cold at the moment and this second single from her One of the Boys album has emulated the success of her first single I Kissed a Girl (also found on musicvideos.net.au). This one features her getting married or not as the case might be - hope you like it.

Once again the genius of director SPike Jonze is on display for all to see with this clip for old school hip hop outfit - The Pharcyde. The entire clip is in reverse but so beautifully thought out that it seems that it is moving normally just that it looks a bit weird. It has been copied many times since but no one has come close to pulling it off like Jonze. Enjoy!

Well this award winning track by Amy Winehouse also goes into one of the reasons for her celebrity. The song is produced by the amazing Mick Ronson (who did Lou Reed's brilliant Transformer album) and the music video is alot of fun with her band getting in on the act. Enjoy!

One of my favourite songs of the ninties and a memorable clip to go with it. The lead singer Richard Ashcroft probably has one of the most interesting faces around and his relentless roaming around the streets of London seems to fit perfectly with the tone of this song. AA definite classic.

Coldplay decided to team with hip hop music video legend Hype Williams for their latest music video to the song Viva La Vida. Interesting use of colour and special effects. Interestingly there is a second music video for this song made by another music video legend in Anton Corbijn - we will put that one up sometime soon so you can compare. Enjoy this one.

Well revenge has never seen the likes of Lily Allen before - in this video to her charming song 'Smile' she goes to pretty extreme lengths to ruin a ex-boyfriend. The video is directed by music video veteran Sophie Muller who does her usual slick job on it. Entertaining as it is cute, have fun with it.

40. Numb - Linkin Park - Joe Hahn

October 10th 2008 11:02
Successful rockers Linkin Park made this haunting clip to go with there song Numb and showcases the problems that young people in society today have. The clip is directed by the talented Joe Hahn who when not directing episodes of the X-Files likes to hang out with the band he plays in - Linkin Park. Enjoy

Mark Romanek has worked with artists as diverse as Johnny Cash, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Weezer and Michael Jackson. Here he again shows his versatility teaming with Rapper JayZ for this fine clip for the song 99 Problems (from the black album). Breaking the stereotype of what a rap video normally looks like going for gritty black and white and beautifully shot. Watch for the cameo from famed rock/rap producer Rick Rubin. I love this clip

If you want to shed a good girl image then releasing a track called 'promiscuous' is a good start. Nelly Furtado is a very talented song writer/performer and here she dumps the wholesome 'like a bird' image for a down and dirty one. Helped by uber R&B producer Timbaland. Watch out for the cameos in the clip (including Justin Timberlake)

See you soon

Not a song about Sarah the Duchess of York Ferguson but by Fergie the lead singer of the successful R&B outfit The Black Eyed Peas. Her solo career has been scarily successful and with songs like these it's no suprise (really if you are sampling both James Brown and Kraftwerk you can't go wrong, right?). The clip features a cameo from Black Eyed Pea colleague Will I Am (taking a break spruiking for Barack Obama) as a sort of Willy Wonka character in 'Fergiland'.

Talk about fun music videos - this homage to low budget 1970's cop shows is an absolute riot. Each member of the group plays an actor playing a character (complete with crazy subtitle). It moves at a million miles an hour and is a great example of Spike Jonze's sense of fun and play. Have fun with this clip

Great song by one of grunge's great survivors - Green Day. Showing they can do mellow ballad as well as the hard rocking stuff this track off the wonderful American Idiot album shows their true versatility as a band. A great clip to go with the song directed by Samuel Bayer

Brilliant song, brilliant clip - dutch master Anton Corbijn makes a clips in his trade mark black and white, one that challenges gender conventions with the band dressed in drag. Set in Berlin and using everything that city has to offer. As a side note the dignified old man in the clip is actually Bono's father. One of my favourites - hope you enjoy!

There are a lot of little pop poppets coming out of the UK (Lily Allen, Amy Whinehouse) but I think Kate Nash is the pick of them - this song Pumpkin Soup is typical of her fun style. Great clip by Kinga Burza who does fun better than most video directors. Enjoy!!

This amazing song by a young Sinead O'Connor was actually wriiten by Prince. Her performance of it is so real and heart felt director John Maybury smartly focused on her performance and just let her sing the song with a close up of her shave head against a black background. It is certainly now a classic clip. Enjoy!

Classic Brit pop track that rules the air waves in 1996. The brothers Gallagher reached their pinnacle with this superbly memorable clip. Liam's Whine, Noel's Haricut and the original band feature in this nicely made and shot clip by music video veteran Nigel Dick (just a few years later Britney Spears would be his Muse). Hope you enjoy Manchester's finest and a great moment in pop/rock music

The princess of pop and colour aficianado Pink returns with this boppy little number about wanting to start a fight - the clip in very tongue in cheek with her losing out a table to Jessica Simpson. It goes on about her being a rock star - yada yada. Dave Meyers who has made a name for doing pop clips (see TI's Whatever You Like) helms this piece of fluffyness (pink fluffiness like fairy floss)

This is a stunning new video for heavy metal outfit Metallica - it tells the story of a couple of Marines in different lines of duty. It is thought provoking and looks at the lives of what people in the armed services go through without ever being condescending or overtly patriotic. Danish director Thomas Vinterberg is one of the founding members of the Dogme 95 group (started by Lars Von Trier). Kirk, James, Robert 'goat boy' Trujilo and Lars are all back to form as this song and album rocket up the charts.

This is one of the greatest music videos of all time and one that redefined what you could do. Ever the musical innovator Peter Gabriel got sequences of the music video made using stop motion and claymation animation. The result is something both memorable and a whole lotta fun. As a sid note one of the animators on this clip is Nick Park who went on to do the very brilliant Wallace and Grommit series and the feature film Chicken Run.

Veteran R&B and hip hop music video director Dave Meyers has made this slick video for rapper T.I. - not to be confused with the song written by American singer Nicole Scherzinger from the pussy cat dolls of the same name which featured T.I.. It is a number one on the Billboard charts and the clip is proving just as popular with over 11 million hits to date.

It features Reagan Gomez-Preston playing a girl working in a fast food restaurant who dreams of a life as the girlfiend of a famous rapper dude.

This is the rare version of Kanye's Heard 'Em Say clip directed by the incredible Frech wiz Michel Gondry. It was filmed in the famous Macy's department store but the store pulled the plug on the video (apparently due to the 'government administers AIDS line) - it features cameos by Adam Levine from maroon 5 and Jon Brion who both perform in the song.

Here it is kids - the one that started it all - the grand daddy of Grunge and the Inspiration for just about every rock act since. Samuel Bayer's music video is a maelstrom of high school angst. Cobain was apparently unhappy with the final edit and re-edited it himself (including that great close up of himself at the very end). Along with his laid back shouting this is the big and dorky Kris Novaselic and an impish long haired Dave Grohl who bangs away one of Rock and Rolls biggest drum intros. All in all a classic, seminal clip that will continue to feature in many many top ten lists for years to come.
