Music Videos - December 2008

Clint Eastwood Gorillaz
Gorillaz Clint Eastwood

This track comes from Gorillaz first self titled album. The world's biggest virtual band burst onto the scene with this hit in 2001 (though they had started up in 1998). The brain child of Blur frontman Damon Albarn and Tank Girl comic creator Jamie Hewlett the band is made up of four animated characters. In terms of success Albarn struck gold with this album but that pails compared to the success he had with their second album Demon Days in 2005. We eagerly await their next album due late 2009 - till then enjoy this great clip.

186. The Safety Dance - Men Without Hats

December 31st 2008 22:25

The Safety Dance Men Without Hats
Men without Hats or should that be Men Without Jobs

What better way to ring in the New Year than with this the one hit from one hit wonders Men Without Hats . The Safety Dance was big in the early 1980’s. It features a great music video with medieval imagery (or like Lord Of The Rings) and was filmed in the village of West Kington in the south-west of England. The lead singer Ivan Doroschuk is the only member of the band to perform in the clip which also features a dwarf and Morris dancing. Truly memorable – have fun remembering (or discovering) this one.

Toe Jam BPA
Toe Jam BPA - porn sex nudity? Or fun with black censor bars

This is an amazing clip that is both very naughty and very funny. Shot like a dodgy 1970's swedish orgy from some bad magazine the protagonists strip off and have their rude bits covered by a black bar or black dots (again typical of some soft core porn from the late 1970's early 1980's) The nudei dancers move around into positions where the black censorship bars and dots actually form there own pictures. It's really inventive and funny.

I did a little digging around about the group the BPA. First of all the track features the vocal talents of legendary Talking Heads front man David Byrne as well as the rapping skills of Dizzee Rascal - probably the number one rapper in the UK. The BPA stands for the Brighton Port Authority. The band is an alias for one Mr Norman Cook - who was the bass player for the House Martins but gained real fam and notoriety as electronic artist Fatboy Slim - Part of this fame was with the use of really clever and inventive music videos. So it all fits perfectly. Anyway here is the ciip for Toe Jam - ENJOY

184. Bad Cover Version - Pulp

Pulp Bad Cover Version
Bad Cover Version

This video features celebrity impersonators who gather, in a similar style to the video for Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" to perform a ‘tribute’ to Pulp. All the lookalikes appear to perform their own lines in the style of the artists they are impersonating, with the exception of the Jarvis Cocker lookalike, who is miming to Cocker's vocal. Cocker himself appears in the video dressed as Brian May, playing the guitar solo that ends the song. Interestingly Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain makes an appearance (or an impersonator or him) from beyond the grave. A very very funny clip. ENJOY!

Hard To Explain The Strokes
The Strokes Hard To Explain

A wonderful clip by New York indie rockers The Strokes. One of the most simple clips going around with footage of them playing at a concert staged by MTV cleverly intercut with stock footage (some of which was taken from the film Koyaanisqatsi ). The music video was directed by Roman Coppola (son of Francis Ford Coppola and brother of Sofia Coppola - directing talent obviously runs in the family). Enjoy

Herbie Hancock Rockit
Jazz Legend Herbie Hancock - Rockit

When Jazz legend (and we are talking about one of Miles Davis's keyboardists here) decided to turn his hand to pop music he completely changed it forever - this is probably the earliest beginnings of rap and hip hop. The first popular tune to include scratching and turntablism. This revolutionary track also came with a music video decades ahead of its time. UK directing team Godley and Creme motorised human sculptures from sculptor James Whiting and got them to move in rhythm with the music. Herbie Hancock proved that he could turn his hand to anything with this track and the results might look slightly dated now but this was seriously groundbreaking at the time as no one was doing anything like it musically or visually. Enjoy this great clip.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Everything is Everything

One of the best rap/hip hop videos made. This comes from Lauryn Hill's first solo album (The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill) after leaving the hugely successful band The Fugees. The clip is on an epic scale with the whole of Manhattan turned into a giant record player. The track features a then unknown John Legend playing piano. The hugeness of the clip matches the big orchestral nature of the track and it all makes for the perfect background of Hill's soulful singing and incisive rap. Here it is - Enjoy

Feist I feel it all

Another great clip from Director Patrick Daughters who has made his name with some great clips for the band the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. This clip is for Canadian singer songwriter Feist and uses big metal oil barrels with fireworks in them that she initially activates by hitting them then she performs with fireworks in the background. A really well thought out clip that works. Enjoy.

Oxford Comma Vampire Weekend
Vampire Weekend Oxford Comma

Another great clip of 2008 - this one is for American Indie Pop band Vampire Weekend and thir extremely catchy tune Oxford Comma. The concept behind the video was for it to be filmed in one long shot, with unified visual and musical aspects. It features the band and in particular the lead singer walking through various story lines and narratives going on in the background. It is beautifully directed by English comedian Richard Ayoade (who was involved in the mighty boosh). There is alot going on but it holds together really well and is really well shot. I love it. Weezer Pork and Beans YouTube
Pork and Beans

This (along with the Hot Chip video for Ready for the Floor) gets my vote for the best music video of the yar. It is also one of the funniest. Anyone who has a good working knowledge of YouTube will recognize the celebrities from the site - the evolution of dance guy, miss South Carolina, the endless videos of the mentos in diet coke stunts, the Chocolate Rain song guy, Chris Crocker of 'LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!' fame. In fact here's a complete list of who's in this video. Gary Brolsma ("Numa Numa guy"), Matt McAllister, Mark Allen Hicks ("Afro Ninja"), Caitlin Upton, Judson Laipply, Chris Crocker, Kicesie, Tay Zonday, Kevin Federline (stock footage), Kelly, Ryan Weiber, Michael "Dorkman" Scott, Jeong-Hyun Lim, Dramatic Prairie Dog (including lookalikes of J-Pop group Mini Moni, who were in the original TV clip the Dramatic Prairie Dog originated from), Fritz Grobe and Stephen Voltz's Diet Coke and Mentos eruptions, parody G.I. Joe PSAs, catching Raybans with one's face, the Dancing Banana, Will It Blend?, All Your Base Are Belong to Us, Sneezing Panda, One Man Band by Connor Berge, Daft Hands, Daft Bodies, the Soulja Boy dance (listed on YouTube as "Crank That Soldier Boy"), a CGI Donald Duck and King Kong, Charlie the Unicorn, and the UFO sighting in Haiti Hoax video.

The direction is great and Matt Cullen does a wonderful job holding it together. As you'd expect this video has had alot of hits on YouTube (15million and counting). It certainly is a pop culture milestone clip and has been nominated for several awards including a grammy!. Here it is - hope you enjoy

Karma Alicia Keys

The beautiful and talented Alicia Keys had a hit with this song a few years back. It's a really interesting clip by hip hop directing mainstay Chris Robinson. He made this clip in 2003 and it features some interesting imagery and was shot in New York City and at Casa de Campo resort's Altos de Chavón amphitheatre, in La Romana, Dominican Republic. The clip went on to win best R & B video in the 2005 MTV awards. A great clip by a talented artist. Enjoy

Hot Chip - Ready For The Floot

This is a wonderful clip directed by Nima Nourizadeh. It has been said the clip is all about duality with the lead singer Alexis Taylor feautred both as a nerd and the joker intercut with the most precise editing I've seen in a music video for ages. The use of colour and the splitting of the images is brilliant and the track is so much fun and so catchy you can't help but get caught up in it. This track from electro-brit rockers is one of my favourites from the past year. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did,

One of the great dance tracks of 2008 from a music project made up of New York based DJ Andy Butler. Members include Nomi Ruiz, Kim Ann Foxman and Antony Hegarty (lead vocalist in Antony & The Johnsons). The track rocks and the clip is fantastic - it's kind of a mythological surreal thing with smoke doing all kinds of tricks and a beuatiul woman walking around this surreal landscape - enjoy

Well it is the festive season so I thought I'd celebrate with this classic 1980's track. The video shot at the Olympic stadium in Los Angeles Is simple - band rehearsing concert then playing concert. The big hair, the outrageous flying stunt are just part of what remains so great about this ear - the complete excess. So here it is in it's glory - enjoy

Do They Know Its Christmas
Do they know its christmas

It's Christmas - there's no need to be afriad...

Not until a group of well meaning but drowning in there own self importance pop stars come around to do a song about how those poor people in Africa are suffering so much they don't even know its christmas!!

Written by Midge Ure from Ultravox - this song is only matched in the cringeworthy stakes by the American effort - USA for Africa doing We Are The World.

My favourite moment in this song and clip is Bono's dramatic effort for the line "Well Tonight Thank God it's them instead of you"

Presented for your Christmas entertainment

A big merry christmas to everyone who has come to this site in the past few months - Here's hoping for many more great new clips in 2009

Proving that her first release from the circus album - Womanizer - was no fluke, Ms Spears is back with the title track from the album. In the clip for Circus she gets to play around with all the wonderful aesthetics that go with the big top. The clip is directed by Francis Lawrence who directed her in Slave4U and had a hit with the recent Will Smith feature film I Am Legend. This clip is already getting millions of YouTube hits and will end up being one of the biggest hits of the year. Erykah Badu
New Amerykah

A superb clip for a great track from one of the albums of the 2008. Erykah Badu's New Amerykah is as bold, funky and sassy as she is and this track settles into a very funky groove. The clip is amazing - as done from the perspective of a woman looking through a record (yes vinyl records) store. She flicks past albums stopping every now and then to pick out an album (based on other famous album covers) which features Badu in the style of that album cover singing. If that wasn't enough when the woman buying the records goes to the counter to pay, the camera pans up and there is a video playing on the TV that is a parody of Outkast's Hey Ya video (featuring her ex-boyfriend Andre 3000). There's a lot in this clip - directed by hip hop video master Chris Robinson. Here it is.

Last Christmas Wham
Wham Last Christmas

From the really cheesy 1980's file comes this horror piece from english two piece Wham. So much sugar in this song you can get cavities just listening to it!!! The video features Wham's two band members George Michael and Andrew Ridgely frolicking in the snow with their respective girlfriends. See how long you can last through it!!!

Here are the lyrics to the chorus

Last Christmas
I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year
To save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special(Special)

- and it's that last special that really makes you want to wretch

Anyway here's the video - enjoy!

Reggae influenced singer Sean Kingston had a bonafide worldwide hit with this song alothough the lyrics proved somewhat controversial with the use of the word suicidal (he later changed this to In Denial for radio play). Weapon Of Choice Walken

One of my all time favourite videos - there is no question of this video being a classic. Firstly the track by fatboy slim is amazing and features funk legend Bootsy Collins doing his thang. And it also has samples from Sly and the Family Stone. BUT it is for the remarkable music video directed by Spike Jonze that this song has its fame.

Spike Jonze called on the actor Chris Walken (famous for his bad guy action roles but who had been a dancer in his youth) to dance and fly around a hotel lobby. Great dance moves and some fun special effects make this just a joy to watch. Here it is - Enjoy it!

Hungry Like The Wolf - Duran Duran

Nothing screams 80's more than the english pop band Duran Duran and this 1982 clip has it all. Shot on the streets and in the jungles of exotic Sri Lanka by Russell Mulcahy (who would go on to direct the Highlander films) this clip features the band running around in bright white suits being attended to by locals. Completely out of place is an African woman painted as a cheetah who makes roaring faces. Its a bit crazy, the narrative isn't really explained (why does Simon LeBon just upturn a table in a bar?) and it's completely over the top but there is no doubting that its a fun clip - those were the 80's. Mark Ronson would be just about the hottest DJ on the planet right now and his ability to do wonderous cover versions of songs went to a new level with this. I funky ska version of Radiohead's Just. Made for the Exit Music album of Radiohead covers it is sassy and not an unworthy version of this great song. Singer Alex Greenwald does the vocals and feature in the clip with multilpe Ronson's What's more the video parodies the ground breaking Radiohead clip and makes fun of the whole narrative with subtitles. The famous scene with all the people lying on the ground is mercilessly sent up with the same people getting up and dancing. It ends wth another cliff hanger which will no doubt be the springboard for another video. The original version of this song comes from 1959 and was a hit for Cliff Richard and The Shadows. The song was written by Lionel Bart (who wrote the music for the musical Oliver!). This clip was made in 1986 with The Young Ones - a comedy group in England based around Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson and was written by a young Ben Elton. One of the characters of ridicule on the show was indeed Cliff Richard (the Young Ones being the title of a Cliff Richard song). They got together nd made this cover of his original song. The end result is very memorable and very very funny. Enjoy

Well she is still one of the most talked about artists going around - this video was directed by Joseph Kahn who directed her in the Toxic video. An all time classic music video from one of the great artists. Michael Jackson so often used film genres for his clips (horror for thriller) and this clip draws its inspiration on the sort of gang war that lies at the heart of the musical west side story. The clip is directed by veteran Bob Giraldi and is choreographed by Michael Peters (who plays the gang leader in the white outfit). The song features a killer lead guitar rift and one of the great guitar solos by Eddie Van Halen and it represent a fusion of R & B and Rock. One for the ages - enjoy

The simple video by Justin Francis shows Alicia singing the song in various rooms and playing the piano as she is capable of doing (one of the more talented performers going around at the moment). The song is a grammy winner and has gone onto more than 70million YouTube hits!!! - Enjoy

The clip for the most angst - written song ever written was directed by Nick Egan and features a dimly lit Alanis Morissette hitch hiking her way across a desert. The song was apparently written after her first lover Dave Coulier (from the terrible sitcom Full House) ditched her. Her revenge came in the form of this angst ridden song which became a runaway hit all over the world. Enjoy

Written by One Republic's Ryan Tedder - this song is performed by English singer Leona Lewis and is one of the most ever watched clips on YouTube. The clip is by prolific video maker Jesse Terrero. The idea for the clip for this pop ballad came from songwriter Tedder and features a storyline involving Lewis arguing with her boyfriend, played by model Nicholas Lemons. Here it is

138. Waterfalls - TLC

December 12th 2008 09:56

Great R & B track from the mid 90's. from all girl outfit TLC. The girls did this startling song which deals with serious issues like drug dealing and AIDS. The clip mixes little narratives for each of the verses with amazing shots of them as water goddesses. A great clip for a terrific song - enjoy

With the announcement that Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon have settled their differences and are reforming Blur - I thought I'd take a look at their most successful song. Song 2 was a working title that just stuck - with a sly killer guitar riff and a fantastic 2 minute length that makes you want to hit the repeat button on the cd/mp3 player. Directed by Sophie Muller who has done other clips for them. Have fun with this one.

Another great clip by Samuel Bayer (he of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit fame). This time with Californian hippy rockers Blind Melon. The clip stars Heather DeLoach as the "Bee Girl" — a young tap dancer wearing a homemade bee costume and large glasses, modeled after the Blind Melon album's cover: It opens on the girl's tap routine; the audience responds with laughter, and the girl runs off stage in tears. As the song plays, she wanders through a city, stopping to perform her dance for whoever will watch. Ultimately — at the point in the song where the word "escape" is repeated — she peeks through a gate, astonished, then runs through it to join a group of "bee people" of all shapes and sizes dancing joyfully in a green field. (from wikipedia).

This clip is all about the joy of life and both the wonderful song and mesmerising (and cute) visuals make that message sing out with so much heart and spirit (maybe the pre teen spirit). Enjoy.

Another sensational clip by the master of the form - frenchman Michel Gondry. This time his muse is Australian pop princess Kylie Minogue and his vision is to replicate a simple scene with each verse and chorus with more and more action and replicating of the participants (he ends up with four Kylie Minogues walking around and singing - the attention to detail on each pass by is staggering and the finished clip is something to behold - enjoy

Canadian pop princess Avril Lavigne struck gold with this annoyingly catchy but ultimately annoying song. She is a record executives wet dream a manfactured pop sensation designed to get as many demographics and subcultures as possible. The clip is unremarkable BUT the most watched ever video on youtube - EVER - it's ridiculous but over 100,000,000 times this video has been viewed. Someone likes it - enjoy

133. Rock The Casbah - The Clash

December 9th 2008 03:45

One of my favourite bands doing one of my favourite songs. Yes the clip for Rock the Casbah might be simple but it is effective and does a wonderful job relaying the fun of this great song. Filmed near the oil wells of Austin Texas this song is true to it's middle eastern/north African subject matter (I think it has something to do with the Algerian Wars of the 1950's and 60's) Hope you enjoy dancing around the room to this awesome song

Take yourself all the way back to about a decade ago and there was this sexy teenage school girl waiting for the clock to go to end the school day - She then goes into the corridor outside the classroom and just dances in a fairly provocative way while asking you to hit her one more time. If there is one way I'd like to remember Ms Spears it would be this clip (or the awesome Toxic clip) something innocent but not about it (remember the whole I'm a virgin thing at the time???) well since then she's been pregnant, married, kissed madonna, bald, in rehab, had sreaming queens defend her on YouTube and gone all the way back to number one again. Quite a feat really - full marks to Nigel Dick for giving us a great introduction to remember her by. Enjoy

The current king of the hip hop scene is back with this very cool clip. It feature him in an all white suit singing in a white room (why is it black rappers like white suits???) and then in the chorus he is magically joined by african drummers. It's a good little clip - hope you enjoy

Another staggering clip from music video master Mark Romanek - showing all the ingenuity and artistic flair at his disposal he takes references from the work of Francis Bacon and works them into this memorable song from the Nine Inch Nails (he also does their song The Perfect Drug and the amazing Johnny Cash cover of their song Hurt). I couldn't imagine any other team of artist and director coming up with something this stark and original ever. Definitely one of my all time favourites - here in all its glory - enjoy

Definitely an 80's classic. It was around this time the Police were probably considered the biggest band in the world and this lovely song cemented their place in the popular conscience. The clip is shot in high contrast black and white with long dissolves and looks really beautiful (if not a little arty). It has won numerous awards including MTV's first ever cinematography in a music video award. It is an amazing clip and song - though it is for all practical purposes about stalking - go figure (then enjoy)

Breaking up is always hard to do even if you are the hottest music star going around - just ask Chris Brown. Going with the lyrics to this rap ballad the video has Chris trying to say goodbye to an unsuccessful relationship. After much angst he finally breaks up with his beautiful girlfriend and then starts dancing with another woman. Nicely shot it look really good. Enjoy

The first rap video to get any real airplay - the one that brought it to the mainstream and one of the great clips of all time featuring one of the biggest bands in the world with a new force in the world of music. Producer Rick Ruben hit on the crazy idea of putting Aerosmith live together with Run DMC who were freestyling over their songs. A match made in heaven and one tht broke the rules then tore down the barriers. Word.

This video and song are hot hot hot!!! Beyonce in black and white (meaning its her alter ego Sasha Fierce). Great song and such fun lyrics (glad my wife too her advice!). It is beautifully directed by Jake Nava and the choreography by JaQuel Knight shows off Beyonce in all her booty shaking R & B glory. Hope you enjoy this one as much as me (sorry about the slightly smaller format but I have to find ways of bringing you the good stuff.)

This is another amazing clip for Kylie Minogue this time directed by british sculptor turned directed Dawn Shadforth. It is a futuristic piece where Ms Minogue wears amazing clothes held on by the powers of gravity and gets airbrushed to within an inch of her life. In the future people will also wear plastic coloured cones on their heads and do weird robot dances - I can't wait - enjoy

It's a very cool song, lots of eye candy for everyone - but if you watch it closely it is an AMAZING music video. The reason is quite simple - it is the work of french music video master and my personal favourite music video maker of all time - Michel Gondry. You will quickly spot little visual tricks that are a hall mark of Gondry's music videos and feature films. It is dazzling and sad that this is not as well known as some of his other clips - at least you can enjoy it here.

I could try and describe this clip but others have done a far better job than I could ever hope to - one writer likened it to a post apocalypse orgy, another described Ms Aguilera as having just descended from an intergalactic hookers convention. If I was going to ad my literary contribution to its critique I might say that while it is directed by photographer bad boy David LaChapelle it looks more like the inside of an Ali G wet dream (AAaaaaIIIII) Whatever your take you have to admit it goes with the nature of the song - its DIRRTY - enjoy (though you might need a bath afterwards just watching!

Well there's another Baz Lurhman extravaganza in the cinemas (Australia) so I thought we would take a look at a music video born of his last film Moulin Rouge. A cover of a Patti LaBelle original it features four of the biggest female names (well they were at the time) in R & B, Soul and hip hop. The clip is produced by Missy Elliot. It uses a set similar to that of Moulin Rouge and they perform in lingerie to mimc the visual look of the film. Enjoyable eye candy. Here it is

A classic from the golden age of rap - if your older than 30 you will remember the lyrics. What you might not know is the pumping bass line is provided by none other than Flea from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Don't believe look for his cameo in the clip - Enjoy
