It's a long way to the top AC/DC
ACDC It's a long way to the top

A remarkable song and video clip. Shot in my hometown of Melbourne Australia with the band playing the song on a flat bed truck down the main street (swanston street) in the city. Directed by TV show studio director Paul Drane who made the clip for the countdown program on February 23 1976 this is an absolute classic and features the Rats Of Tobruk Pipe Band. Enjoy.

214. Rock Me Amadeus - Falco

January 25th 2009 23:28
Rock Me Amadeus Flaco
Falco Rock Me Amadeus

Johann Holzel a.k.a Falco was probably more successful in his native Austria in terms of longevity but there was this one moment where he had the attention of the whole world. Following on the Academy Award success of Milos Foreman's film of Peter Schaffer's play Amadeus, Falco released this electro pop classic with a crazy video incorporating both modern and old world Austrian design. The song is annoyingly memorable, with the rap parts done in a mxture of German and English and the familiar chorus "Rock Me Amadeus" done just like that.It just doesn't make sense but hey that was the eighties - enjoy

A great quirky clip from the eighties and English rock pop outfit - The Fine Young Cannibals. Directed by Pedro Romhanyi. It was nominated for best video in the 1989 MTV video awards. Features some crazy dancing a guy with a TV for a head and definitely inspired the HotChip - Ready for the Floor video (which can also be found on this site. A fun clip - Enjoy

Beyonce If I Were A Boy
If I were a Boy Beyonce

Fresh from her starring role at the Obama Inauguration here's Beyonce Knowles and a big hit from last year - If I were a Boy. Directed by her main collaborator on film Jake Nava the video deals with the role reversal hinted at in the song. Beyonce and her partner swap roles and she goes out drinking with the guys and hanging out with his attractive work mate (they happen to be cops). Beyonce gets sprung canding with her attractive workmate but reality is restored and it is Beyonce who has been cheated on. Shot in Black and White which seems to suit her (as Jake Nava used on her next big hit Single Ladies - also on this site). Enjoy

Unfinished Sympathy Massive Attack
Massive Attack Unfinished Sympathy

One of my favourite clips from British electronic outfit - Massive Attack. The song is breath taking in its sound and scope, it has an epic feel to it that comes from the combination of heavy almost classical string line and a relentless urban thumping beat.

Baillie Walsh's music video for the song matches its intensity visually. It is one of the first clips to be shot in one take with no edits. It follows the guest singer for the track (the incomparable Shara Nelson) as she sings the track walking down a Los Angeles street. The camera tracks her as she passes bikies, junkies, homeless people and others in a down trodden part of the city. There are also cameos from the members of the band (Robert 3D Del Naja, Grant Marshall and Andrew Vowles). A work of art that has been admired and endlessly copied since its release in 1991 on the ground breaking Blue Lines album. Enjoy.

Eurythmics Would I Lie To You
Would I Lie To You Eurythmics

An absolute killer track from brilliant British duo the Eurythmics. This song has an incredible blues and roots feel to it (hence the majority of people in the clip are black) and has that fierce gospel growl that Annie Lennox brings. The clip fits the song like a glove and has a narrative of Lennox's boyfriend having an argument with her before she goes on to perform. He then returns to continue it while shes on stage and the audience kick him out. Its a good clip to a truly great song - I know you'll enjoy this one.

The latest song from the Pussycat Dolls is this power ballad - I Hate This Part. It is a simple clip with lead singer Nicole Scherzinger playing the piano in the middle of nowhere while other band members have inconvenient moments (like a car breaking down etc) effecting them. Sure to be a hit.

206. Hello - Lionel Ritchie

January 10th 2009 08:14
Hello Lionel Ritchie
Lionel Ritchie Hello

One of the more disturbing clips around from the 1980's. Lionel Ritchie plays a music teacher at a college where he sings about his unrequited love for a blind arts student. He does this as he stalks her around the campus. Until a moment in a sculpting class where he discovers she has similar feeling for him to the point where she has created a likeness of him in clay.

Hello Lionel Ritchie
Lionel Ritchie Hello

It is truly an unsettling moment in an unsettling clip - Apparently the clip is based on a never made screenplay called 'Spaldeen Summers". The clip also serves to remind us exactly why Nicole Ritchie is famous and that Lionel once was popular in his own right (must have been the moustache) - Enjoy

205. How Soon Is Now - The Smiths

January 10th 2009 03:12
How Soon Is Now The Smiths
The Smiths How Soon Is Now

Great song by one of the great bands of the 1980's. The Smiths magic comes from Morrissey's bizarre voice and off beat lyrics and the amazing guitar of Johnny Marr - truly one of the most underated musicians and one who wasn't afraid to experiment and find new ways of doing things. This track is famous for a strange new oscillating guitar sound which Marr described for Giutar player magazine "The vibrato sound is fucking incredible, and it took a long time. I put down the rhythm track on an Epiphone Casino through a Fender Twin Reverb without vibrato. Then we played the track back through four old Twins, one on each side. We had to keep all the amps vibrating in time to the track and each other, so we had to keep stopping and starting the track, recording it in 10-second bursts... We did it in three passes through a harmonizer, set to some weird interval, like a sixth. There was a different harmonization for each pass. For the line in harmonics, I retuned the guitar so that I could play it all at the 12th fret with natural harmonics. It's doubled several times"

The clip was released without the band's knowledge or permission by the record company - they hated it but it stands up and works with the song.

Anyway here it is in all it's glory - enjoy

Freedom 90 George Michael
George Michael Freedom 90

Long before he embarked on his successful feature film career (which now includes se7en, fightclub and the Curious Case Of Benjamin Button), David Fincher was one of the people defining the form of music videos. He had a golden period in the early 90's where he made several clips for Madonna (including the amazing Vogue video) and this one for George Michael. George was really trying to invent himself during this time and did so by a) not appearing in the clip and b) getting some of the sexiest models in the world to mouth the words while being amazingly shot by David Fincher. One of the more sensual video clips ever made - featuring Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Tatjana Patitz, Cindy Crawford, Todo Segalla and Scott Benoit. It also featured the destruction of various symbols of Michael's past, including the famous guitar, jukebox, and leather jacket of the Faith era. Enjoy (plenty of eye candy for everyone!)

Sex On Fire Kings Of Leon
Kings Of Leon Sex On Fire

It's one of the biggest songs of 2008 and a number one around the world but it really is a kind of generic rock song and one feels maybe it got more time and airplay because it had sex in the title. The clip is ok with some religious overtones and it is nicely shot but nothing overly memorable. Still it received over 10 million hits on YouTube so someone must be loving it. Enjoy

U2 - Sweetest Thing
Sweetest Thing U2

Awesome clip by Kevin Godley to U2's Sweetest Thing. The song was originally a b-side to Where The Streets Have No Name back in 1987 but gained popularity with the re-release for the greatest hits CD. The clip features Bono singing to his wife in an open top vehicle with a range of cameos and activities happening all around and in the background. These feature elephants and chippendales and appearances by Boyzone and the rest of the band. It is a memorable clip and fits the heartfelt sentiment of the song - enjoy

Drop It Like Its Hot

One of the big hip hop hits of the past few years. Snoop Dogg teamed up with uber producer Pharrell Williams (whose Neptunes produced the track) and came up with a tune so catchy that it stays in your head for days. Great musical and lyrics hooks and a couple of wonderful raps. The clip is monochrome black and white and follows the lyrics closely (explaining some of the hip hop language as they go on). It's directed by hip hop video master Paul Hunter. Its a great clip - enjoy!

Praise You - Fatboy Slim
Fatboy Slim Priase you

For our 200TH post I thought I'd give you a very special all time favourite video of mine. Fatboy Slim has made a name for himself with catchy tunes and great videos. Spike Jonze is the director who has put music videos on the map. This outrageous crazy clip features the director Jonze as the leader of a fictional dance troup - Richard Koufey of the Torrence Community dancers. The group perform a routine to puzzled theatre goers outside a Los Angeles cinema who are not quite sure what to make of it. Fatboy Slim has a cameo in the clip as an onlooker. The end of the clip features a mockumentary interview with the leader Koufey and the troup post performance - where he claims to have a lot of B-Boy influence coming from New York. Such a easy concept but it is so well done - would have cost them next to nothing and the final result is one of the most famous and best music videos of all time. Enjoy

R & B singer songwriter and producer Sleepy Brown has spent most of his time in the background. Most notably as the writer of Waterfalls for TLC.now he comes into his own as performer with a little help from Mr Pharrell Williams and Outkasts Big Boi (one of the acts he produced) Though this clip is basically a chance for the three guys to spend some time off the Spanish coast with some uber hot senoritas (and no doubt down several Margaritas!) Ladies of the World - Flight of the Conchords
Flight of the Conchords - Ladies of the World

A very funny song by a very funny group. New Zealand comedy duo - Flight of the Conchords have been steadily growing from obscurity to cult status and heading towards mainstream. The duo write songs with quirky lyrics but have a solid music base to them. This clip was directed by the talented Nima Nourizadeh who has already featured several times on this site - most recently with the Ready for the Floor clip for Hotchip. Take some to to listen to the lyrics of this song - it will have you rolling on the floor with laughter. Enjoy

I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor
Artic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor

Sheffield based rockers The Artic Monkeys burst onto the scene with this song. The simple clip - a live performance fits with their music - simple and raw. The clip was deliberately shot with video cameras from the 1970's to give the clip a vintage kind of look. The song has references to 80's band Duran Duran (there's a line about Rio in the the song - Rio being a Duran Duran song). As subtle as a sledgehammer - here it is

Learn To Fly Foo Fighters
Foo Fighters Learn To Fly

Dave Grohl tried his hand at directing this clip and the Foo Fighters frontman succeeds in the most spectacularly funny way. The clip is a parody of the film Airplane! There's a narrative where by two dodgy maintenance men (played by Jack Black and Kyle Gas of Tenacious D put a drug (an erotic sleeping powder) into the coffee machine on board and everyone on the plane except the band drinks it. The band are the only normal ones on the plane and left with the job of landing it safely. Each member of the band plays several characters including themselves (flight attendants, the pilots and various passengers). One of my favourites. I know you will enjoy this one!

Ching-A-Ling Missy Elliott
Missy Elliott Ching-a-Ling

Two videos for the price of one - the first half is to the track Ching-A-Ling the second half is to Shake your pom pom. This is a truly awesome video (well the Ching-A-Ling part) made so by the presence of Japanese hip hop dancing troop U-min. These guys are masters of dancing in slow-motion and the art of 'popping'. The dancers are left to do there stuff against a simple white background (with a few other shots relating to th song intercut into it). The second part of the video is shot as if at a house party and doesn't grab you like the first half. Directed by hip hop specialist Dave Meyers. Enjoy!

Bullet With Butterfly Wings Smashing Pumpkins Samuel Bayer
Smashing Pumpkins Bullet with butterfly wings

Great clip from one of the great 1990's bands. The Smashing Pumpkins called on the help of master grunge clip maker Samuel Bayer (of Nirnvav's Smells Like Teen Spirit fame) to make this clip that was inspired by documentaries on diamond mines in the third world. These images of people working on a hillside are intercut with the individual members of the band in various glamourous poses. It is also notable as the last time we see lead singer Billy Corgan with hair (after this clip he shaved his head and we haven't seen his hair since!) A clip packed with big concepts and raw emotion - hope you enjoy!

Another great hip hop video from the master of the genre - Chris Robinson. This time he has Jay Z and a great track to work with in Roc Boys (And the winner is)... This clip is full of gangster iconography and a really strong narrative that weaves its way through the clip with the aid of titles. It is beautifully shot and features cameos from Mariah Carey (playing a gangster mole) and Sean 'Puff Daddy / P Diddy" Combes who also produced the track. Great samples and a killer riff (not disimilar to his girlfirend Beyonce's Crazy In Love) make this a memorable track with a great clip to go with it - enjoy

192. Epic - Faith No More

Faith No More Epic
Epic Faith No More

Faith No More burst onto the scene in 1990 with this bona fide top 10 hit. The band with its strange fusion of heavy metal and rap the band was primarily responsible for the creation of the rap metal genre. The film clip matches the song with its surreal imagery and storm effects. It is memorable for lead singer Mike Patton jumping around and rapping with boxing gloves.

The clip caused quite a bit of controversy with animal rights groups as it shows a gold fish flapping about out of water. But the scene was shot in slow motion and was in reality only out of water a few seconds before it was put back into its tank. Band members claim the goldgish was a present from Icelandic singer Bjork. Anyway here is the clip - Enjoy

YOU HAVE BEEN RICKROLLED
Rick Astley Never Gonna Give You Up Rickrolled
YOU HAVE BEEN RICKROLLED

Ahh the 1980's. They gave rise to many really bad music trends some have vanished thankfully into thin air (so who were Bros?) but then there are others that remain with us like a bad smell. One such music video is this one from Rick Astley.

Potentially the daggiest clip ever made to a catchy but overproduced tune from the evil Stock Aitken Waterman team. The red haired crooner from Lancastershire become a household name in the 1980's with this mega hit. It then faded over time and became just a vague bad memory.

But lo - the internet came along and with its ability to breathe life into things that should be well and truly dead - came an internet phenomenon where by people started to prank others via e-mail (it started on April Fools Day) urging them to open a link that they were told was fun/important/vital to their well being only to be directed to the YouTube video of the Never Gonna Give You Up clip. And so the phenomenon of RICKROLLING was born.

So here at

www.musicvideos.net.au

we have decided to accept this cultural phenomenon and share with you the pleasure of being RICKROLLED

190. Sober - Pink

January 1st 2009 11:00
Pink Sober
Sober Pink

Pink has had a big year and this is her latest offering. This clip was shot in Stockholm Sweden and features Pink and a doppelganger who goes out and gets drunk and ends up flirting with guys and girls. She then calls up Pink. Then it suddenly goes into a small white room and Pink is now wearing white and a short haired bob white wig with a fringe - where she sings some more. Then as this clip gets weirder she is in a forest with things reflected off the trees. Then in a final completely bizarre twist - the doppelganger ends up in Pink's bed and starts having sex with her. Yep there a fairly full on lesbian scene which is intercut with pink or the other one either singing in the forest or drunk at the initial party. So she is basically having sex with herself.

I have no idea what is going on in this clip - might have to watch it a few times to find out

MGMT Electric Feel

Brooklyn based pop duo MGMT (formerly known as The Management) had a big hit with this the second single off their Oracular Spectacular album. The clip is a psychedelic crazy jungle party with a bizarre fantasy feel to it. It was nominated for a 2008 MTV award for art direction. It definitely has that LSD acid drug trip feel to the clip (and the track). One of the biggest songs and clips from 2008 – hope you enjoy!.
