Music Videos - The latest and greatest music clips.

Brilliant song, brilliant clip - dutch master Anton Corbijn makes a clips in his trade mark black and white, one that challenges gender conventions with the band dressed in drag. Set in Berlin and using everything that city has to offer. As a side note the dignified old man in the clip is actually Bono's father. One of my favourites - hope you enjoy!

This is one of the greatest music videos of all time and one that redefined what you could do. Ever the musical innovator Peter Gabriel got sequences of the music video made using stop motion and claymation animation. The result is something both memorable and a whole lotta fun. As a sid note one of the animators on this clip is Nick Park who went on to do the very brilliant Wallace and Grommit series and the feature film Chicken Run.

Hurt Johnny Cash
Hurt Johnny Cash

This clip is one of the most emotional I have come across - it's the late great Johnny Cash doing a cover of the Nine Inch Nails song Hurt. He makes it his own. And there is so much pain it really does hurt - probably more moving in five minutes than the whole film Walk The Line. Caash is 6 months away from his death and his wife June Carter Cash who is pictured in the video is a few weeks away from her death.

It features a mixture of Cash singing and playing the guitar and Piano in the run down House of Cash museum as well as archive footage from Johnny Cash's career. This is intercut with shots of Jesus on the Cross. The editing builds and the cutting gets quicker as the song reaches its big climax. The penultimate shot is an archive shot of cash with guitar as he looks up at the camera it feels like he is looking straight through you as you have just watched his entire life pass before you. The shot goes for half a second. It's brilliant, beautiful and really touching. Mark Romanek has made the final tibute video to a legend - Hurt by Johnny Cash - enjoy

Give It Away Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Give It Away Red Hot Chilli Pepper

French photographer Stephane Sedanoui loves black and white photography so he employed it on this clip for the Red Hot Chilli Peppers first big hit Give It Away. The metallic gold body paint on the naked bamd members puts the emphasis on the body and brings to life the playful sexuality that abounds in this clip. The editing is fast and frentic and works with the camera movement and crash zooms to create a second dance. This clip encapsulates what the Red Hot Chilli Peppers are about and was pivitol in setting up the bands style, name and brand. So get down and funky - it's the Red Hot Chilli Peppers with Give It Away

The Music Video Diary blog is now using the domain name www.musicvideos.net.au - this was an established blog that I am taking over. The focus on my blog is the quality and creativity of the music and video artists involved. However some of the previous posts don't reflect my views or tastes (God knows why anyone would list crap like the young divas or Anthony Callea and if I offend fans of those pissweak artists I am not even remotely sorry - get some taste)

Joy Division Atmosphere
Joy Division Atmosphere

Anton Corbijn was a young photographer with a particular style and love for black and white. He thought his style sat perfectly with a new musical style coming from the UK in the late 70's early 1980's typified by the band Joy Division. So he left his native Holland and went to London to photograph the band. He took several memorable photographs. Then years after the lead singer Ian Curtis has died and the band had morphed into New Order he was asked by head of factory records Tony Wilson to do a clip for the song Atmosphere - with no lead singer he decided to make the clip into a tribute to Ian Curtis and used photographs blown up and carried by druids to create an eerie but perfect tibute to the lead singer of Joy Division - Corbijn has just made his first feature film - a biopic on the life of Ian Curtis called Control. So here it is - Atmosphere by Joy Division. Please enjoy this amazing clip.

Bachelorette Bjork
Bachelorette Bjork

I couldn't think of a better video to show what I am on about in this blog than this collaboration between Icelandic song maiden Bjork and french visual artiste extraordinaire Michel Gondry. They have collaborated seven times on music videos but this is my favourite - a story within a story within a story it just keeps going until the original story unravels leading to a chain of unravelling - why waste time explaining when I can show you - enjoy

stay tuned for more great videos like this one in two days time

Guns N' Roses' - Sweet Child O' Mine

August 25th 2006 08:54
Appetite for Destruction was Guns N' Roses' breakthrough album. Beginning with the hit "Welcome to the Jungle", Appetite for Destruction combined elements of glam metal, then-groundbreaking thrash metal bands and classic, anthemic choruses. The album was a #1 American hit and worldwide sales exceeded 25 million. It is an RIAA Certified Diamond Album.

Sweet Child O' Mine was the second single off the album and Guns N' Roses' first No. 1, spending three weeks at the top spot in 1988.
This song is listed on the "100 Greatest Guitar Solos" from Guitar World as number thirty-seven, and also came in at number three on Blender's 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born, and at number 196 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In March 2005, Q magazine placed it at number 6 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks. The introduction's famous D-flat based riff was also voted number-one riff of all-time by the readers of Total Guitar magazine.

The music video is below.

In the video above the guitar riffs in the middle don't seem right. This one below has them correct, but doesn't have the opening riff! I looked around but couldn't find a perfect video.

Guns N' Roses’ are touring this year. Two days ago their official website was updated for the first time in 4 years. This is a huge development for some Guns N' Roses fans. Their next album, entitled "Chinese Democracy" which has been a work in progress since 1998, is also due out this year some time. Chinese Democracy has been in production for almost nine years at a cost of over thirteen million dollars, making it the most expensive album ever recorded.

Here is a clip of Guns N' Roses' on tour at Bercy in Paris this year. The bands current line up is:
Axl Rose - lead vocals
Robin Finck - lead guitar
Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal - lead guitar
Richard Fortus - rhythm guitar
Tommy Stinson - bass guitar
Brian "Brain" Mantia - drums
Dizzy Reed - keyboards
Chris Pitman - keyboards

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

August 18th 2006 06:20
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" is the first track and first single from Nirvana's 1991 album Nevermind, and is commonly regarded as the song that brought Nirvana and grunge music to the attention of the world. Many consider Smells Like Teen Spirit to be the anthem of the nineties, even, the anthem of a generation. It is also widely considered the definitive Grunge song, and its raging popularity opened the gates for countless other bands of this genre such as Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. It reached #1 for many weeks on charts around the world.
In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked "Smells Like Teen Spirit" ninth in its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 2002, the song was featured in an episode of the SBS documentary series, Impact: Songs That Changed The World.

The music video itself, directed by Samuel Bayer, who would later go on to direct videos for such notable rock acts as Green Day, is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the Most Played Video on MTV Europe.

The demolishing of the set captured in the video was essentially uncontrolled. The extras that filled the bleachers had been forced to stay seated for the entire afternoon of filming, and had sat through uncountable replays of the song. By the time Bayer turned them loose, the set became a scene of chaos.
