Hot Chip - Ready fot the floor
Hot Chip - Ready For The Floot

This is a wonderful clip directed by Nima Nourizadeh. It has been said the clip is all about duality with the lead singer Alexis Taylor feautred both as a nerd and the joker intercut with the most precise editing I've seen in a music video for ages. The use of colour and the splitting of the images is brilliant and the track is so much fun and so catchy you can't help but get caught up in it. This track from electro-brit rockers is one of my favourites from the past year. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did,

174. Blind - Hercules and Love Affair

December 27th 2008 03:21
Hercules and Love Affair
Blind

One of the great dance tracks of 2008 from a music project made up of New York based DJ Andy Butler. Members include Nomi Ruiz, Kim Ann Foxman and Antony Hegarty (lead vocalist in Antony & The Johnsons). The track rocks and the clip is fantastic - it's kind of a mythological surreal thing with smoke doing all kinds of tricks and a beuatiul woman walking around this surreal landscape - enjoy

Weapon Of Choice Christopher Walken Fatboy Slim
Weapon Of Choice Walken

One of my all time favourite videos - there is no question of this video being a classic. Firstly the track by fatboy slim is amazing and features funk legend Bootsy Collins doing his thang. And it also has samples from Sly and the Family Stone. BUT it is for the remarkable music video directed by Spike Jonze that this song has its fame.

Spike Jonze called on the actor Chris Walken (famous for his bad guy action roles but who had been a dancer in his youth) to dance and fly around a hotel lobby. Great dance moves and some fun special effects make this just a joy to watch. Here it is - Enjoy it!

N.E.R.D. everyone nose
everyone nose

Clever name for a clever song about why the girls really go to the bathroom in the club. Pharell Williams and the boys from N.E.R.D (no one ever really dies) are back with this track dropping som impressive beats. The clip by veteran music video director Diane Martel is a clever mix of stills at the beginning then split screen (nine boxes but it ain't no Brady Bunch). There are also cameos from Kanye West, Samantha Ronson and her gal pal Lindsay Lohan. Here it is

163. Get Shaky - The Ian Carey Project

The Ian Carey Project - Get Shaky
Get Shaky

Baltimore electro outfit The Ian Carey Project have struck gold with this catchy number called Get Shaky. The clip will take you back to your school days - passing notes around class and the general shennanigans that go on at lunchtime. Vocals are supplied by Kelly Barnes. Enjoy

Lady Gaga Just Dance

A fun clip from Lady gaga featuring Colby O'Donis. Set at a house party with different areas - people have fallen asleep but are woken by lady gaga. Directed by Melina Matsoukas it has had more than 23,000,000 hits on YouTube and has reached #3 on the billboard charts. Enjoy

Hungry Like The Wolf - Duran Duran

Nothing screams 80's more than the english pop band Duran Duran and this 1982 clip has it all. Shot on the streets and in the jungles of exotic Sri Lanka by Russell Mulcahy (who would go on to direct the Highlander films) this clip features the band running around in bright white suits being attended to by locals. Completely out of place is an African woman painted as a cheetah who makes roaring faces. Its a bit crazy, the narrative isn't really explained (why does Simon LeBon just upturn a table in a bar?) and it's completely over the top but there is no doubting that its a fun clip - those were the 80's. Enjoy

So in the new category comes this number from Australian electronic duo Empire of the Sun. A fun clip with its asian retro stylings and film references. Some nice music video techniques and its generally well shot. Here's to some home grown talent - enjoy

Yes the man responsible for FightClub, Se7en and The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button collaborated with the undisputed queen of pop to come up with this very memorable clip. Exquisitely shot in black and white and in a design that recalls 1930's glamour and art deco this clip is one of the defining clips of the 1990's. Madonna never looked this good and Fincher's direction is astounding.

With a killer riff, a rap provided by boyfriend Jay Z and her obvious talent - Beyonce was always going to make it on her own. With her Destiny Fulfilled she went solo with this monster hit that took the world by storm. The clip features her in various dance sequences (my favourite being the one where there is water going everywhere). A fun clip to a great song - Enjoy

An all time classic music video from one of the great artists. Michael Jackson so often used film genres for his clips (horror for thriller) and this clip draws its inspiration on the sort of gang war that lies at the heart of the musical west side story. The clip is directed by veteran Bob Giraldi and is choreographed by Michael Peters (who plays the gang leader in the white outfit). The song features a killer lead guitar rift and one of the great guitar solos by Eddie Van Halen and it represent a fusion of R & B and Rock. One for the ages - enjoy

110. U Can't Touch This - MC Hammer

November 22nd 2008 21:55

Yes, I had to include it because of it's impact in the whole rap R & B world - MC Hammer made the phrases U Can't Touch This and Hammertime part of everyday language in this epic rap song about how good he was. Of course it all starts with the sample from Rick James masterful funk number SuperFreak. There is much to be made of this clip - one of the original booty shaking clips, that oversize parachute pants, the bizarre little dance thing has does. But my favourite moment is about four minute in as he sings the lyrics "I've toured around the world from London to Bombay" - there is a 3 second slo mo shot of him jumping backwards wearing only his underwear and a bowler hat - it ALWAYS cracks me up. Enjoy

Great song with an interesting clip. Madonna's contribution to the race debate in America was this clip which features a black man coming to her aid during an assault and then being the one arrested. There is all kinds of religious iconography, the burning KKK cross, the black Jesus with the gospel choir and the compelling little narrative going through it makes it compelling viewing - watch for cameo from soul diva Chaka Khan. Enjoy

OK. This would be in my top 5 music videos of all time and would be close to my favourite all time clip. Director Michel Gondry has the best catalog of work of any music video director going around and this one tops them all. It is almost too difficult to describe - the use of film and video is strange but the incredible transitions between the two makes it something to behold. An awesome song with a killer vocal track by Oasis' Noel Gallagher - this is one you need to watch a few times to get what's going on - and after a few hundred viewing you still won't know exactly how it was made. Pure Genius.

For my 100th posting on this blog I thought I would choose the video clip voted by Rolling Stone Magazine as the #1 clip of all time (that's their choice not mine - which I will put up soon). It is made by the brilliant Jonathan Glazer who made the Virtual Insanity clip for Jamiroquoi and has gone on to direct the feature film Sexy Beast. The stark and beautiful surrealism of this clip is matched by its though provoking imagery. Starring Dennis Lavant as the muttering man. The final scene, the final moment with it's almost religious overtones as a man stands up to the pressures of life is both haunting and memorable. A must see
