110. U Can't Touch This - MC Hammer

November 22nd 2008 21:54

Yes, I had to include it because of it's impact in the whole rap R & B world - MC Hammer made the phrases U Can't Touch This and Hammertime part of everyday language in this epic rap song about how good he was. Of course it all starts with the sample from Rick James masterful funk number SuperFreak. There is much to be made of this clip - one of the original booty shaking clips, that oversize parachute pants, the bizarre little dance thing has does. But my favourite moment is about four minute in as he sings the lyrics "I've toured around the world from London to Bombay" - there is a 3 second slo mo shot of him jumping backwards wearing only his underwear and a bowler hat - it ALWAYS cracks me up. Enjoy

Great song with an interesting clip. Madonna's contribution to the race debate in America was this clip which features a black man coming to her aid during an assault and then being the one arrested. There is all kinds of religious iconography, the burning KKK cross, the black Jesus with the gospel choir and the compelling little narrative going through it makes it compelling viewing - watch for cameo from soul diva Chaka Khan. Enjoy

Great clip - psychotic rock chick locked in a cell with just instruments and speakers. She goes into a rock fuelled frenzy of a wanna be star. Directed by french duo Jonas and Francois - this one is going to be big. Here it is

OK. This would be in my top 5 music videos of all time and would be close to my favourite all time clip. Director Michel Gondry has the best catalog of work of any music video director going around and this one tops them all. It is almost too difficult to describe - the use of film and video is strange but the incredible transitions between the two makes it something to behold. An awesome song with a killer vocal track by Oasis' Noel Gallagher - this is one you need to watch a few times to get what's going on - and after a few hundred viewing you still won't know exactly how it was made. Pure Genius.

For my 100th posting on this blog I thought I would choose the video clip voted by Rolling Stone Magazine as the #1 clip of all time (that's their choice not mine - which I will put up soon). It is made by the brilliant Jonathan Glazer who made the Virtual Insanity clip for Jamiroquoi and has gone on to direct the feature film Sexy Beast. The stark and beautiful surrealism of this clip is matched by its though provoking imagery. Starring Dennis Lavant as the muttering man. The final scene, the final moment with it's almost religious overtones as a man stands up to the pressures of life is both haunting and memorable. A must see

This video sort of stars like real life - with Stefani on the phone to her manager talking about the prospects of her own solo career post 'No Doubt'. It then goes into this incredible fantasy land based on Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. The clip is directed by Francis Lawrence who went on to direct the 2008 hit film I am legend with Will Smith. Enjoy.

The lead singer of the Black Eyed Peas has carved out an incredibly successful solo career - Fergie (of Fergalicious fame) hits us this time with a softer ballad rather than the high energy she is known for). Directed by pop music video favourite Anthony Mandler - this clip is beautifully shot and Fergie looks amazing. Hope you enjoy it.

Definitely one for the guys - Swedish DJ made this annoyingly catchy tune using a sample from Steve Winwood's song Valerie - Winwood re-recorded the lyrics so they would now be call on me. The clip by Huse Monfaradi features very scantily clad women in gym doing an aerobic routine that borders on soft porn. Naturally there is one lucky guy in the room also working up a sweat. There are references to films but really this clip is just an excuse to watch women with not much on jump around. To that end it succeeds brilliantly. Hope you enjoy (which will be easy for the guys)

A bright breezy clip for the latest offerent from the music act known as Gnarls Barkley. Directed by Happy, look for the cameo from Justin Timberlake. A trippy, freaky hippy spin out of a clip. Hope you enjoy it.

A brilliantly simple but effective clip by swedish music video director Jonas Akerlund (of u2 Beautiful day fame). The simple close up of the eye matches the gentle majesty of Moby's hit Porcelain. The song and image work quite beautifully together and the end result is haunting. A great collaboration for a worthy result. Hope you enjoy it.

Canadian born portugese songbird Nelly Furtado again teams up with uber producer Timbaland (following the success of their hit Promiscuous) and knock out this cool R & B number. Shot on location in LA and directed by cool English duo Rankin and Chris the clip features the ultra sexy Furtado in a slinky Alex Perry cocktail dress as she steams up the screen. Her image transformation is just about complete and 36 million youtube watchers like what they see - judge for yourself - enjoy

Uber producer Timbaland (the man who made Justin Timberlake's career) teamed up with the band One Republic and re-mixed their song Apologize written by the band's front man Ryan Tedder. The result was great musically. Several clips exist for this song but this is the most viewed version by director Robert Hales (who has done work for Jet and Gnarls Barkley). The use of close up imagery is stunning and your eyes remain fixed on the screen. It's a great clip. Here it is - enjoy

A great clip and the song that made No Doubt famous. Don't Speak was off their tragic kingdom album. The clip by Minnieapolis film maker Jeremy Plumb shoes the band in a state of tension as the other band mates gets annoyed that Gwen Stefani is the centre of attention. It starts with an interesting shot of the bass plater Tony Kanal as some kind of God pic king a rotten fruit of a tree. Definitely a great clip - enjoy!

Another great clip by dutch master Anton Corbijn - here he teams with one of his long time collaborators - British indie electro pop outfit Depeche Mode. Classic Corbijn - black and white shot on a super 8 camera for that gritty realism. Enjoy

With links to electro rockers Daft Punk this french dance group have put in a decisively catchy effort in D.A.N.C.E. And it features this wonderful clip where the cool t-shirt of the band members get fully animated in the most fun way possible. A great visual pop art clip. Enjoy!!

Great song which came to prominence with an acoustic cover of it by Jose Gonzales. The original by swedish electronic outfit The Knife is playful and has this simple but wicked little clip from Johannes Nyholm. Very cool - check it out.

Hey there, here is a slightly disturbing film clip by the electro groovers Basement Jaxx where mad scientists merge the band members with monkeys. Very weird - even more so if you are watching it late at night while on drugs. Enjoy!
