116. Papa Don't Preach - Madonna - Directed by James Foley
November 30th 2008 11:03
This music video and song caused enormous controversy at the time of its release - Madonna singing from the point of view of a young woman who was not married and was pregnant and deciding to keep the child - asking not for her father to give her a lecture but to support her through it. The clip is beautifully made and the narrative of the song is really clear in the visuals. It is shot by long time Scorsese cameraman Michael Ballhaus and the director James Foley has gone onto a successful career as a feature film director (including the outstanding Glengarry Glen Ross). A lovely piece of film making that still holds up (and I don't think Madonna ever looked as amazing as she does in this clip) - special mention to lead actor Danny Aiello (who has had a magnificent career including Spike Lee's amazing film on race in New York - Do The Right Thing) who plays Madonna's father - with believable sincerity Enjoy
