Don't You Forget About Me Simple Minds
Don't You Forget About Me Simple Minds

Written specifically for the film The Breakfast Club - writers Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff were looking to have Bryan Ferry or Billy Idol record the song - they were finally convinced to go with Scottich New Wave band Simple Minds - they recorded it in three hours and forgot about it until the film was released and it became the biggest hit of their career. Here it is in all it's 80's glory - enjoy

Take Me Out Franz Ferdinand
Take Me Out Franz Ferdinand

Glasgow pop-rockers Franz Ferdinand (named after the grand duke of the same name) had a huge global hit with this second release of their self-titled debut album. Directed by Jonas Odell the animated clip is a nod to the crazy animated work of Monty Python's Terry Gilliam as well as 1930's musical director Busby Berkley. A ripping original clip for one of the catchiest pop/rock songs of the decade - enjoy

I think we're alone now Tiffany
I think we're alone now Tiffany

While there was great music in the 80's there's also some tragic stuff - this definitely fits category. Tiffany Renee Darwish better known as just Tiffany became pop sensation on the back of this cover of a 1960's song by Tommy James and the Shondells - she didn't even like the song but her astute manager thought it would be the perfect vehicle for pop stardom. The first part looks like it was shop at highpoint shopping centre - A guilty pleasure - enjoy

This Love Maroon 5
Maroon 5 This Love

This clip for the catchy tune by Maroon 5 - This Love caused some controversy for the intimate scenes between lead singer Adam Levine and his girlfriend. I'm putting it in for the memorable tune - the video is directed by veteran Sophie Muller who has directed clips for Blur and Annie Lennox. Here it is - enjoy

Together in electric dreams
Phil Oakey and Giorgio Moroder

This is a clip for the song Together in Electric Dreams by Human League's lead singer Phil Oakey and famed music producer Giorgio Moroder. It was written for the feature film Electric Dreams - but the song transcended the film and was probably more popular and well known in the end. Here it is in all its 80's glory - enjoy

Everybody wants to rule the world
Everybody wants to rule the world

English pop duo burst onto the scene in the mid 80's with their monster album - Songs from the big chair. It gave rise to several massive hits, Shout and this song, Everybody Wants to Rule the World. This lovely film clip was shot on location in Southern California and was directed by renowned music video director Nigel Dick (who went on to work with Oasis and Britney Spears among others). The clip was hugely popular and a major part of the bands success in the US. Great song, great clip - enjoy

Canadian indie rock singer Feist found this little gem of a song by Australian indie rock queen Sally Seltmann (who started her career under the name New Buffalo). It's cute and catchy, bright and fun - enjoy

Losing My Religion - REM
REM - Losing My Religion

Breaking with their rules of never having the band lipsync along to a video REM decided to let director Tarsem Singh loose with his ideas about art and religion and the connection between to make this beautiful video. Although the band had been around for a while and well known in the indie scene this was their breakout song/video that saw them become mainstream (and giving the world the most famous Mandolin break ever). A wonderful music video inspired by the films of Tarkovsky and the paintings of Caravaggio.

Enjoy

239. Respectable - Mel and Kim

Respectable Mel and Kim
Mel and Kim - Respectable

This clip is a throw back to 1987 and it is the product of the Stock,Aitken and Waterman production house that gave us Rick Astley and Kylie Minogue. This Jamaican born sister duo of Mel and Kim Appleby was one of the better things that they did. They burst onto the scene with this memorable song that went number one around the world but just when they looked set for international stardom the dream ended with the tragic death of Mel to cancer. At least we will have this clip to remember them by

Sexx Laws Beck
Beck Sexx Laws

The music video, directed by Beck himself, is partly a tribute to the film Mr. Freedom.[1] Jack Black appears in the music video as a member of the Vision Warrior Men's Circle, along with Neil Strauss and Justin Meldal-Johnsen[2] Surreal elements of the video include a refrigerator dry humping an oven, Kenny G (played by Meldal-Johnsen) in a room of football players, and a spinning mannequin of a zebra with a banjo.

There are several versions of the video. The original (once posted on Beck's website) was over 18 minutes long and extended the intro of the Men's Circle. The subsequent versions edited out the intro and ending, the latter truncating a pep rally speech by Jack Black's character.

Daft Punk Da Funk
Da Funk Daft Punk

Well Spike Jonze new feature film Where The Wild Things Are is coming out soon (oct 16 for those in the States a little later here in Australia where they actually shot the movie - and I worked on it!!) Anyway I thought it was a good time to see more of Spike's early music video work and this one from euro big beat master Daft Punk is a favourite. A man-dog with a leg injury walks down a street in New York - you know anything is possible on one of those Big City Nights. Roll the video - enjoy

Alien Ant Farm
Alien Ant Farm

With the death of Michael Jackson I thought we'd take a look at this cover. The cover itself is not bad but the clip is hysterical as they cram as many MJ references as possible here's a list

The music video depicts the band performing in a wrestling ring at a house backyard. It also features numerous references to Michael Jackson:

* The video for the original "Smooth Criminal" is referenced when the band members do the video's anti-gravity lean.
* Various objects and sidewalk panels lighting up is a reference to the video for "Billie Jean." Additionally, an editing technique utilizing several split screens and freeze frames mirrors a similar sequence in "Billie Jean."
* The scene where lead singer Dryden Mitchell stands on a car and screams while its windows explode is taken from the controversial ending of the video for "Black or White".
* Several references are made to "Thriller", including the dance by the old men, the werewolf mask worn by the girl jumping into the pool, and the end of the video where a man turns to the camera with cat's eyes.
* The chimpanzee is a reference to Jackson's pet chimp Bubbles. In addition to that, the chair Mitchell is sitting on during the scenes with the chimp is shaped like a gloved hand.
* The Japanese school girls in uniforms holding the sign reading "We love AAF" is a reference to Jackson's idol status in Japan.
* Lead singer Mitchell rips a ventilation shaft grill from the ground, releasing steam. This is a combined reference to the video for the song "Bad", in which Jackson pulled a grill from a subway wall as well as another scene from the controversial ending of the video for "Black or White" where Jackson danced in steam rising from the ground.
* Michael Jackson-like vocalizations can be heard, including a high-pitched "Whoo!" several times in a row.
* The lead singer Mitchell pulls up his pants to expose his socks, much like Jackson.
* Drummer Mike Cosgrove wears one white studded glove.
* Bobby Edner performs a dance similar to the moves of Jackson. He wears an E.T. shirt, a reference to the E.T. storybook album narrated by Jackson. In an alternate version of the video, he is wearing a surgeon's mask, as Jackson often did in public.
* One man has a tattoo of Elizabeth Taylor on his back. In 1989, Taylor proclaimed Jackson as the King of Pop. The same man also sports lizard and/or cat like eyes, the same as Michael from the end of the Thriller video.

here's the clip - enjoy

The Universal - Blur
Blur - The Universal

A great clip for a great song by a great band - The Universal was from Blur's fourth studio album The Great Escape. Their previous album Parklife featured two big ballads (To the End and This Is A Low). The Universal fits the same bill here. The clip is by British wunderkid director Jonathon Glazer (who thrilled us with the Jamiroquoi Virtual Insanity clip and then went on the direct feature films Sexy Beast and Birth). The clip is notable for it's homage to Stanley Kubrick's groundbreaking 1971 film A Clockwork Orange. The band are dressed up like the Droogs from the film and many of the shots are references to the film (Glazer has elements of Kubrick films in most of his clips). From the pinnacle of brit pop here is Blur's Universal - enjoy

234. Gold - Spandau Ballet

Gold - Spandau Ballet
Spandau Ballet

No band is quintessentially more 80's than UK pop new romantic sensation Spandau Ballet - led by the brothers Kemp they ruled the eighties with their power ballads and heart felt lyrics. This is one of my favourites and I am sure will bring alot of memories back for those who were around in 1983 - it went all the way to number #2 on the UK charts (during that time when Michael Jackson's thriller seemed to hold most of the number one spots). Hope you enjoy...

Cardigans - My Favourite Game
Cardigans - My Favourite Game

A great clip from the 1990's from director Jonas Åkerlund (clips for U2, Madonna and Macy Gray to his credit). It caused major controversy at the time in Europe due to the joyriding nature of the clip.

This was probably the biggest hit for the Swedish Rock band the Cardigans along with their song from the Romeo Juliet soundtrack - Lovefool.

Enjoy

New Order - 60 Miles an Hour
60 mph New Order

British pop/rock outfit New Order had been together in one form or another for more than 20 years when they released this absolutely killer track in 2001 - great beat, great lyrics and a high level of musicality that have been the hallmark of their careers are all evident here in this amazing track - the clip which came out with the release of the track back in 2001 is a lot of fun and matches the lyrics of the song if not in a somewhat bizarre manner. Enjoy

Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Round
Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Round

OK - because I gave rapper FloRida some air time for his hit Right Round I thought the kids might like to know where the idea originally came from (why is music today SOOOO unoriginal). The British electro pop outfit Dead or Alive had a monster hit with this back in the 80's - in fact in many ways this track is just about the definitive 80's pop song. The clip is very simple, made for nothing, low concept (the band spinning slowly on a turntable as they sing the lyric and it doesn't tell any story - what it does have is a really great performance from front man Pete Burns - in several kooky outfits, the purple kimono and the now notorious eye patch and the moment of multiple arms. Looks to me like someone's having fun. Hope you enjoy this blast from the past.

226. The Look - Roxette

The Look - Roxette
She's got the look

In the shadows of the 80's came this great catchy tune from Swedish group Roxette. While they were hugely popular in their own country nobody else in the world had heard them. An American exchange student who had just returned from Sweden implored local station KDWB Minneapolis to play The Look. A few months later the band had an international number one hit. And had also given the world the lyric - Tasty like a raindrop - she's got the look. The duo comprising of Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle went on to have many hits from their two big albums Look Sharp (which featured The Look) and Joyride. Hope you enjoy

Rock DJ Robbie WIlliams
Robbie Williams is usually comfortable in his own skin

Former Take That singer and then british pop superstar Robbie WIlliams got into all sorts of trouble with this brilliant clip in the year 2000. It is the explcit then gory nature of the clip as Robbie is performing to a group of rollerskating models and failing to win their attention - he is does a strip tease that doesn't get noticed and then...well anatomically speaking removes his skin and starts throwing muscles and organs at the rollerskating models who sensuously rub themselves with his discarded bits. I am doing this great clip by Vaughn Arnell - watch it and you'll know what I mean. Enjoy
