239. Respectable - Mel and Kim

Respectable Mel and Kim
Mel and Kim - Respectable

This clip is a throw back to 1987 and it is the product of the Stock,Aitken and Waterman production house that gave us Rick Astley and Kylie Minogue. This Jamaican born sister duo of Mel and Kim Appleby was one of the better things that they did. They burst onto the scene with this memorable song that went number one around the world but just when they looked set for international stardom the dream ended with the tragic death of Mel to cancer. At least we will have this clip to remember them by

Sexx Laws Beck
Beck Sexx Laws

The music video, directed by Beck himself, is partly a tribute to the film Mr. Freedom.[1] Jack Black appears in the music video as a member of the Vision Warrior Men's Circle, along with Neil Strauss and Justin Meldal-Johnsen[2] Surreal elements of the video include a refrigerator dry humping an oven, Kenny G (played by Meldal-Johnsen) in a room of football players, and a spinning mannequin of a zebra with a banjo.

There are several versions of the video. The original (once posted on Beck's website) was over 18 minutes long and extended the intro of the Men's Circle. The subsequent versions edited out the intro and ending, the latter truncating a pep rally speech by Jack Black's character.

Daft Punk Da Funk
Da Funk Daft Punk

Well Spike Jonze new feature film Where The Wild Things Are is coming out soon (oct 16 for those in the States a little later here in Australia where they actually shot the movie - and I worked on it!!) Anyway I thought it was a good time to see more of Spike's early music video work and this one from euro big beat master Daft Punk is a favourite. A man-dog with a leg injury walks down a street in New York - you know anything is possible on one of those Big City Nights. Roll the video - enjoy

234. Gold - Spandau Ballet

Gold - Spandau Ballet
Spandau Ballet

No band is quintessentially more 80's than UK pop new romantic sensation Spandau Ballet - led by the brothers Kemp they ruled the eighties with their power ballads and heart felt lyrics. This is one of my favourites and I am sure will bring alot of memories back for those who were around in 1983 - it went all the way to number #2 on the UK charts (during that time when Michael Jackson's thriller seemed to hold most of the number one spots). Hope you enjoy...

Cardigans - My Favourite Game
Cardigans - My Favourite Game

A great clip from the 1990's from director Jonas Åkerlund (clips for U2, Madonna and Macy Gray to his credit). It caused major controversy at the time in Europe due to the joyriding nature of the clip.

This was probably the biggest hit for the Swedish Rock band the Cardigans along with their song from the Romeo Juliet soundtrack - Lovefool.

Enjoy

Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Round
Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Round

OK - because I gave rapper FloRida some air time for his hit Right Round I thought the kids might like to know where the idea originally came from (why is music today SOOOO unoriginal). The British electro pop outfit Dead or Alive had a monster hit with this back in the 80's - in fact in many ways this track is just about the definitive 80's pop song. The clip is very simple, made for nothing, low concept (the band spinning slowly on a turntable as they sing the lyric and it doesn't tell any story - what it does have is a really great performance from front man Pete Burns - in several kooky outfits, the purple kimono and the now notorious eye patch and the moment of multiple arms. Looks to me like someone's having fun. Hope you enjoy this blast from the past.

Rock DJ Robbie WIlliams
Robbie Williams is usually comfortable in his own skin

Former Take That singer and then british pop superstar Robbie WIlliams got into all sorts of trouble with this brilliant clip in the year 2000. It is the explcit then gory nature of the clip as Robbie is performing to a group of rollerskating models and failing to win their attention - he is does a strip tease that doesn't get noticed and then...well anatomically speaking removes his skin and starts throwing muscles and organs at the rollerskating models who sensuously rub themselves with his discarded bits. I am doing this great clip by Vaughn Arnell - watch it and you'll know what I mean. Enjoy

The New York Electronic dance queen has hit pay dirt here wih this catchy number and a great clip from Norwegian director Ray Kay. The clip features her playing strip poker with friends in a mansion with a strange man on the couch, dancers in electric blue leotards by the pool and two enormous great Danes in harlequin outfits - enjoy

214. Rock Me Amadeus - Falco

January 25th 2009 23:28
Rock Me Amadeus Flaco
Falco Rock Me Amadeus

Johann Holzel a.k.a Falco was probably more successful in his native Austria in terms of longevity but there was this one moment where he had the attention of the whole world. Following on the Academy Award success of Milos Foreman's film of Peter Schaffer's play Amadeus, Falco released this electro pop classic with a crazy video incorporating both modern and old world Austrian design. The song is annoyingly memorable, with the rap parts done in a mxture of German and English and the familiar chorus "Rock Me Amadeus" done just like that.It just doesn't make sense but hey that was the eighties - enjoy

Beyonce If I Were A Boy
If I were a Boy Beyonce

Fresh from her starring role at the Obama Inauguration here's Beyonce Knowles and a big hit from last year - If I were a Boy. Directed by her main collaborator on film Jake Nava the video deals with the role reversal hinted at in the song. Beyonce and her partner swap roles and she goes out drinking with the guys and hanging out with his attractive work mate (they happen to be cops). Beyonce gets sprung canding with her attractive workmate but reality is restored and it is Beyonce who has been cheated on. Shot in Black and White which seems to suit her (as Jake Nava used on her next big hit Single Ladies - also on this site). Enjoy

Unfinished Sympathy Massive Attack
Massive Attack Unfinished Sympathy

One of my favourite clips from British electronic outfit - Massive Attack. The song is breath taking in its sound and scope, it has an epic feel to it that comes from the combination of heavy almost classical string line and a relentless urban thumping beat.

Baillie Walsh's music video for the song matches its intensity visually. It is one of the first clips to be shot in one take with no edits. It follows the guest singer for the track (the incomparable Shara Nelson) as she sings the track walking down a Los Angeles street. The camera tracks her as she passes bikies, junkies, homeless people and others in a down trodden part of the city. There are also cameos from the members of the band (Robert 3D Del Naja, Grant Marshall and Andrew Vowles). A work of art that has been admired and endlessly copied since its release in 1991 on the ground breaking Blue Lines album. Enjoy.

208. Would I Lie To You - Eurythmics

Eurythmics Would I Lie To You
Would I Lie To You Eurythmics

An absolute killer track from brilliant British duo the Eurythmics. This song has an incredible blues and roots feel to it (hence the majority of people in the clip are black) and has that fierce gospel growl that Annie Lennox brings. The clip fits the song like a glove and has a narrative of Lennox's boyfriend having an argument with her before she goes on to perform. He then returns to continue it while shes on stage and the audience kick him out. Its a good clip to a truly great song - I know you'll enjoy this one.

Praise You - Fatboy Slim
Fatboy Slim Priase you

For our 200TH post I thought I'd give you a very special all time favourite video of mine. Fatboy Slim has made a name for himself with catchy tunes and great videos. Spike Jonze is the director who has put music videos on the map. This outrageous crazy clip features the director Jonze as the leader of a fictional dance troup - Richard Koufey of the Torrence Community dancers. The group perform a routine to puzzled theatre goers outside a Los Angeles cinema who are not quite sure what to make of it. Fatboy Slim has a cameo in the clip as an onlooker. The end of the clip features a mockumentary interview with the leader Koufey and the troup post performance - where he claims to have a lot of B-Boy influence coming from New York. Such a easy concept but it is so well done - would have cost them next to nothing and the final result is one of the most famous and best music videos of all time. Enjoy

190. Sober - Pink

January 1st 2009 11:00
Pink Sober
Sober Pink

Pink has had a big year and this is her latest offering. This clip was shot in Stockholm Sweden and features Pink and a doppelganger who goes out and gets drunk and ends up flirting with guys and girls. She then calls up Pink. Then it suddenly goes into a small white room and Pink is now wearing white and a short haired bob white wig with a fringe - where she sings some more. Then as this clip gets weirder she is in a forest with things reflected off the trees. Then in a final completely bizarre twist - the doppelganger ends up in Pink's bed and starts having sex with her. Yep there a fairly full on lesbian scene which is intercut with pink or the other one either singing in the forest or drunk at the initial party. So she is basically having sex with herself.

I have no idea what is going on in this clip - might have to watch it a few times to find out

MGMT Electric Feel
MGMT Electric Feel

Brooklyn based pop duo MGMT (formerly known as The Management) had a big hit with this the second single off their Oracular Spectacular album. The clip is a psychedelic crazy jungle party with a bizarre fantasy feel to it. It was nominated for a 2008 MTV award for art direction. It definitely has that LSD acid drug trip feel to the clip (and the track). One of the biggest songs and clips from 2008 – hope you enjoy!.

Clint Eastwood Gorillaz
Gorillaz Clint Eastwood

This track comes from Gorillaz first self titled album. The world's biggest virtual band burst onto the scene with this hit in 2001 (though they had started up in 1998). The brain child of Blur frontman Damon Albarn and Tank Girl comic creator Jamie Hewlett the band is made up of four animated characters. In terms of success Albarn struck gold with this album but that pails compared to the success he had with their second album Demon Days in 2005. We eagerly await their next album due late 2009 - till then enjoy this great clip.

Toe Jam BPA
Toe Jam BPA - porn sex nudity? Or fun with black censor bars

This is an amazing clip that is both very naughty and very funny. Shot like a dodgy 1970's swedish orgy from some bad magazine the protagonists strip off and have their rude bits covered by a black bar or black dots (again typical of some soft core porn from the late 1970's early 1980's) The nudei dancers move around into positions where the black censorship bars and dots actually form there own pictures. It's really inventive and funny.

I did a little digging around about the group the BPA. First of all the track features the vocal talents of legendary Talking Heads front man David Byrne as well as the rapping skills of Dizzee Rascal - probably the number one rapper in the UK. The BPA stands for the Brighton Port Authority. The band is an alias for one Mr Norman Cook - who was the bass player for the House Martins but gained real fam and notoriety as electronic artist Fatboy Slim - Part of this fame was with the use of really clever and inventive music videos. So it all fits perfectly. Anyway here is the ciip for Toe Jam - ENJOY

Herbie Hancock Rockit
Jazz Legend Herbie Hancock - Rockit

When Jazz legend (and we are talking about one of Miles Davis's keyboardists here) decided to turn his hand to pop music he completely changed it forever - this is probably the earliest beginnings of rap and hip hop. The first popular tune to include scratching and turntablism. This revolutionary track also came with a music video decades ahead of its time. UK directing team Godley and Creme motorised human sculptures from sculptor James Whiting and got them to move in rhythm with the music. Herbie Hancock proved that he could turn his hand to anything with this track and the results might look slightly dated now but this was seriously groundbreaking at the time as no one was doing anything like it musically or visually. Enjoy this great clip.

Hot Chip - Ready fot the floor
Hot Chip - Ready For The Floot

This is a wonderful clip directed by Nima Nourizadeh. It has been said the clip is all about duality with the lead singer Alexis Taylor feautred both as a nerd and the joker intercut with the most precise editing I've seen in a music video for ages. The use of colour and the splitting of the images is brilliant and the track is so much fun and so catchy you can't help but get caught up in it. This track from electro-brit rockers is one of my favourites from the past year. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did,

Blind

One of the great dance tracks of 2008 from a music project made up of New York based DJ Andy Butler. Members include Nomi Ruiz, Kim Ann Foxman and Antony Hegarty (lead vocalist in Antony & The Johnsons). The track rocks and the clip is fantastic - it's kind of a mythological surreal thing with smoke doing all kinds of tricks and a beuatiul woman walking around this surreal landscape - enjoy
