176. Rain On Your Parade - Duffy

December 28th 2008 00:30
Duffy Rain On Your Parade
Welsh Songbird Duffy

Welsh R and B singer Duffy has borrowed from those sort of live BBC performances from the 1970's to make this cracking video for her hit Rain On Your Parade. Great use of black and white as well as shadow and silhouette. Enjoy

167. Beautiful Girls - Sean Kingston

December 20th 2008 23:12
Sean Kingston Beautiful Girls
Beautiful Girls Sean Kingston

Reggae influenced singer Sean Kingston had a bonafide worldwide hit with this song alothough the lyrics proved somewhat controversial with the use of the word suicidal (he later changed this to In Denial for radio play). The song samples the bass line from the Legendary Ben E King song Stand By Me. The song was one of the biggest hits of 2007. Enjoy.

153. Moving Mountains - Usher

December 16th 2008 09:11
R & B superstar Usher is on a narrative kick in his music videos. They feature the same characters and an ongoing story. This video starts at the end of his Love In This Club video where the club has burned down. Mr Usher then gets on his cell phone to continue his pursuit of the girl. It ends wth another cliff hanger which will no doubt be the springboard for another video. Well I guess its' a bit like a soap opera and once you start watching them you have to know ho the story is going to finish. Here is the middle episode. Enjoy

152. Right Now - Akon

December 16th 2008 07:04
Hot off the press is this new video from Senegalese American Rapper, hip hop and R&B singer Akon. He has had a string of hits in recent years using catchy melodies and this one is no exception. The clip is pretending to be a movie trailer and of course there are the obligatory na na na's. It seems a little over produced to me and the voice track has got some weird distortion thing over it - but hey it's what the kids are listening to right?? Enjoy

With a killer riff, a rap provided by boyfriend Jay Z and her obvious talent - Beyonce was always going to make it on her own. With her Destiny Fulfilled she went solo with this monster hit that took the world by storm. The clip features her in various dance sequences (my favourite being the one where there is water going everywhere). A fun clip to a great song - Enjoy

An all time classic music video from one of the great artists. Michael Jackson so often used film genres for his clips (horror for thriller) and this clip draws its inspiration on the sort of gang war that lies at the heart of the musical west side story. The clip is directed by veteran Bob Giraldi and is choreographed by Michael Peters (who plays the gang leader in the white outfit). The song features a killer lead guitar rift and one of the great guitar solos by Eddie Van Halen and it represent a fusion of R & B and Rock. One for the ages - enjoy

Another very popular YouTube video by R & B queen Alicia Keys. The simple video by Justin Francis shows Alicia singing the song in various rooms and playing the piano as she is capable of doing (one of the more talented performers going around at the moment). The song is a grammy winner and has gone onto more than 70million YouTube hits!!! - Enjoy

138. Waterfalls - TLC

December 12th 2008 09:56

Great R & B track from the mid 90's. from all girl outfit TLC. The girls did this startling song which deals with serious issues like drug dealing and AIDS. The clip mixes little narratives for each of the verses with amazing shots of them as water goddesses. A great clip for a terrific song - enjoy

I could try and describe this clip but others have done a far better job than I could ever hope to - one writer likened it to a post apocalypse orgy, another described Ms Aguilera as having just descended from an intergalactic hookers convention. If I was going to ad my literary contribution to its critique I might say that while it is directed by photographer bad boy David LaChapelle it looks more like the inside of an Ali G wet dream (AAaaaaIIIII) Whatever your take you have to admit it goes with the nature of the song - its DIRRTY - enjoy (though you might need a bath afterwards just watching!

The lead singer of the Black Eyed Peas has carved out an incredibly successful solo career - Fergie (of Fergalicious fame) hits us this time with a softer ballad rather than the high energy she is known for). Directed by pop music video favourite Anthony Mandler - this clip is beautifully shot and Fergie looks amazing. Hope you enjoy it.

A fantastic clip by Nima Nourizadeh for new music act Santogold. An obvious homage to the film The Holy Mountain. This soulful singer songwriter act has a huge potential. Hope you enjoy this one (I know I certainly did!)

Canadian born portugese songbird Nelly Furtado again teams up with uber producer Timbaland (following the success of their hit Promiscuous) and knock out this cool R & B number. Shot on location in LA and directed by cool English duo Rankin and Chris the clip features the ultra sexy Furtado in a slinky Alex Perry cocktail dress as she steams up the screen. Her image transformation is just about complete and 36 million youtube watchers like what they see - judge for yourself - enjoy

Uber producer Timbaland (the man who made Justin Timberlake's career) teamed up with the band One Republic and re-mixed their song Apologize written by the band's front man Ryan Tedder. The result was great musically. Several clips exist for this song but this is the most viewed version by director Robert Hales (who has done work for Jet and Gnarls Barkley). The use of close up imagery is stunning and your eyes remain fixed on the screen. It's a great clip. Here it is - enjoy

With the victory of Barack Obama I thought I'd take a look at a video that shows that music video can do more than just entertain. This video seen by more than 10 million people uses the soaring inspiring words of Obama spoken and sung simultaneously by celebrities who endorse. An interesting point - the film clip's director Jesse Dylan is the son of folk singing legend Bob Dylan. Enjoy this clip that will go down in history with the famous election it accompanied.

This was one of the biggest songs of 2007 and is catchy to the point of being now annoying. A great piece of pop song writing and capped off with a featuring performance from rapper JayZ. Rihanna made herself into a houseold name with this song and music video and struck a deal with covergirl cosmetics to take the music - fashion - commercialisation thing to a new level. Here it is!
