Take Me Out Franz Ferdinand
Take Me Out Franz Ferdinand

Glasgow pop-rockers Franz Ferdinand (named after the grand duke of the same name) had a huge global hit with this second release of their self-titled debut album. Directed by Jonas Odell the animated clip is a nod to the crazy animated work of Monty Python's Terry Gilliam as well as 1930's musical director Busby Berkley. A ripping original clip for one of the catchiest pop/rock songs of the decade - enjoy

Everybody wants to rule the world
Everybody wants to rule the world

English pop duo burst onto the scene in the mid 80's with their monster album - Songs from the big chair. It gave rise to several massive hits, Shout and this song, Everybody Wants to Rule the World. This lovely film clip was shot on location in Southern California and was directed by renowned music video director Nigel Dick (who went on to work with Oasis and Britney Spears among others). The clip was hugely popular and a major part of the bands success in the US. Great song, great clip - enjoy

Losing My Religion - REM
REM - Losing My Religion

Breaking with their rules of never having the band lipsync along to a video REM decided to let director Tarsem Singh loose with his ideas about art and religion and the connection between to make this beautiful video. Although the band had been around for a while and well known in the indie scene this was their breakout song/video that saw them become mainstream (and giving the world the most famous Mandolin break ever). A wonderful music video inspired by the films of Tarkovsky and the paintings of Caravaggio.

Enjoy

Sexx Laws Beck
Beck Sexx Laws

The music video, directed by Beck himself, is partly a tribute to the film Mr. Freedom.[1] Jack Black appears in the music video as a member of the Vision Warrior Men's Circle, along with Neil Strauss and Justin Meldal-Johnsen[2] Surreal elements of the video include a refrigerator dry humping an oven, Kenny G (played by Meldal-Johnsen) in a room of football players, and a spinning mannequin of a zebra with a banjo.

There are several versions of the video. The original (once posted on Beck's website) was over 18 minutes long and extended the intro of the Men's Circle. The subsequent versions edited out the intro and ending, the latter truncating a pep rally speech by Jack Black's character.

The Universal - Blur
Blur - The Universal

A great clip for a great song by a great band - The Universal was from Blur's fourth studio album The Great Escape. Their previous album Parklife featured two big ballads (To the End and This Is A Low). The Universal fits the same bill here. The clip is by British wunderkid director Jonathon Glazer (who thrilled us with the Jamiroquoi Virtual Insanity clip and then went on the direct feature films Sexy Beast and Birth). The clip is notable for it's homage to Stanley Kubrick's groundbreaking 1971 film A Clockwork Orange. The band are dressed up like the Droogs from the film and many of the shots are references to the film (Glazer has elements of Kubrick films in most of his clips). From the pinnacle of brit pop here is Blur's Universal - enjoy

New Order - 60 Miles an Hour
60 mph New Order

British pop/rock outfit New Order had been together in one form or another for more than 20 years when they released this absolutely killer track in 2001 - great beat, great lyrics and a high level of musicality that have been the hallmark of their careers are all evident here in this amazing track - the clip which came out with the release of the track back in 2001 is a lot of fun and matches the lyrics of the song if not in a somewhat bizarre manner. Enjoy

Pumping On Your Stereo - Supergrass
Supergrass - Pumping On Your Stereo

The brilliant team of Hammer and Tongs (film director garth Jennings of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy fame and uper producer Nick Goldsmith) have again come up with a freash and original idea for a music video. The Supergrass song Pumping on your Stereo lends itself to a fun quirky clip. Hammer and Tongs draw on Jim Henson's Muppets for inspiration coming up with puppet bodies for the band and making puppet instruments. It's just good fun with puppets and object (or black) theatre. A great clip - hope you enjoy

You Found Me The Fray

New song from Denver rockers The Fray. This ballad You Found Me has been doing the rounds with the TV shows having been featured for promos for Lost and on Grey's Anatomy. Pretty stock standard sort of rock ballad but it has done extremely well on the charts meaning someone is listening to it. Here it is for your enjoyment

Country House Blur

Great song and clip from the mid nineties by British alternative group Blur. The clip is directed by renowned artist Damien Hirst and takes the lead character's life in the song and turns it into a board game. Watch out for a cameo from Matt Lucas of Little Britain fame long before he was famous. A fun clip with a nod in the Benny Hill direction and yes that is the lovely Jo Guest in her modelling prime. Enjoy

Blister in the Sun Violent Femmes
Violent Femmes Blister in the Sun

This 80's classic from folk rockers the Violent Femmes received a new lease of life when it was used in the early 90's John Cusack film Grosse Point Blank where he goes to a ten year reunion with music from the era (hence the 80's soundtrack where this was the featured song). A great song, hope you enjoy!

The Presidents of the United States of America Peaches

Indie Seattle outfit The Presidents of the United States of America (or The Presidents for short) burst onto the music scene with this first single from their Self Titled Album. It's a fun catchy song, with a fun clip. The final minute turns into a battle between the band and a group of ninjas. These guys have broken up and since reformed. Quirky in the extreme - enjoy

ACDC It's a long way to the top

A remarkable song and video clip. Shot in my hometown of Melbourne Australia with the band playing the song on a flat bed truck down the main street (swanston street) in the city. Directed by TV show studio director Paul Drane who made the clip for the countdown program on February 23 1976 this is an absolute classic and features the Rats Of Tobruk Pipe Band. Enjoy.

205. How Soon Is Now - The Smiths

January 10th 2009 03:12
How Soon Is Now The Smiths
The Smiths How Soon Is Now

Great song by one of the great bands of the 1980's. The Smiths magic comes from Morrissey's bizarre voice and off beat lyrics and the amazing guitar of Johnny Marr - truly one of the most underated musicians and one who wasn't afraid to experiment and find new ways of doing things. This track is famous for a strange new oscillating guitar sound which Marr described for Giutar player magazine "The vibrato sound is fucking incredible, and it took a long time. I put down the rhythm track on an Epiphone Casino through a Fender Twin Reverb without vibrato. Then we played the track back through four old Twins, one on each side. We had to keep all the amps vibrating in time to the track and each other, so we had to keep stopping and starting the track, recording it in 10-second bursts... We did it in three passes through a harmonizer, set to some weird interval, like a sixth. There was a different harmonization for each pass. For the line in harmonics, I retuned the guitar so that I could play it all at the 12th fret with natural harmonics. It's doubled several times"

The clip was released without the band's knowledge or permission by the record company - they hated it but it stands up and works with the song.

Anyway here it is in all it's glory - enjoy

203. Sex On Fire - Kings of Leon

Sex On Fire Kings Of Leon
Kings Of Leon Sex On Fire

It's one of the biggest songs of 2008 and a number one around the world but it really is a kind of generic rock song and one feels maybe it got more time and airplay because it had sex in the title. The clip is ok with some religious overtones and it is nicely shot but nothing overly memorable. Still it received over 10 million hits on YouTube so someone must be loving it. Enjoy

U2 - Sweetest Thing
Sweetest Thing U2

Awesome clip by Kevin Godley to U2's Sweetest Thing. The song was originally a b-side to Where The Streets Have No Name back in 1987 but gained popularity with the re-release for the greatest hits CD. The clip features Bono singing to his wife in an open top vehicle with a range of cameos and activities happening all around and in the background. These feature elephants and chippendales and appearances by Boyzone and the rest of the band. It is a memorable clip and fits the heartfelt sentiment of the song - enjoy
