I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor
Artic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor

Sheffield based rockers The Artic Monkeys burst onto the scene with this song. The simple clip - a live performance fits with their music - simple and raw. The clip was deliberately shot with video cameras from the 1970's to give the clip a vintage kind of look. The song has references to 80's band Duran Duran (there's a line about Rio in the the song - Rio being a Duran Duran song). As subtle as a sledgehammer - here it is

Learn To Fly Foo Fighters
Foo Fighters Learn To Fly

Dave Grohl tried his hand at directing this clip and the Foo Fighters frontman succeeds in the most spectacularly funny way. The clip is a parody of the film Airplane! There's a narrative where by two dodgy maintenance men (played by Jack Black and Kyle Gas of Tenacious D put a drug (an erotic sleeping powder) into the coffee machine on board and everyone on the plane except the band drinks it. The band are the only normal ones on the plane and left with the job of landing it safely. Each member of the band plays several characters including themselves (flight attendants, the pilots and various passengers). One of my favourites. I know you will enjoy this one!

Bullet With Butterfly Wings Smashing Pumpkins Samuel Bayer
Smashing Pumpkins Bullet with butterfly wings

Great clip from one of the great 1990's bands. The Smashing Pumpkins called on the help of master grunge clip maker Samuel Bayer (of Nirnvav's Smells Like Teen Spirit fame) to make this clip that was inspired by documentaries on diamond mines in the third world. These images of people working on a hillside are intercut with the individual members of the band in various glamourous poses. It is also notable as the last time we see lead singer Billy Corgan with hair (after this clip he shaved his head and we haven't seen his hair since!) A clip packed with big concepts and raw emotion - hope you enjoy!

192. Epic - Faith No More

Faith No More Epic
Epic Faith No More

Faith No More burst onto the scene in 1990 with this bona fide top 10 hit. The band with its strange fusion of heavy metal and rap the band was primarily responsible for the creation of the rap metal genre. The film clip matches the song with its surreal imagery and storm effects. It is memorable for lead singer Mike Patton jumping around and rapping with boxing gloves.

The clip caused quite a bit of controversy with animal rights groups as it shows a gold fish flapping about out of water. But the scene was shot in slow motion and was in reality only out of water a few seconds before it was put back into its tank. Band members claim the goldgish was a present from Icelandic singer Bjork. Anyway here is the clip - Enjoy

184. Bad Cover Version - Pulp

Pulp Bad Cover Version
Bad Cover Version

This video features celebrity impersonators who gather, in a similar style to the video for Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" to perform a ‘tribute’ to Pulp. All the lookalikes appear to perform their own lines in the style of the artists they are impersonating, with the exception of the Jarvis Cocker lookalike, who is miming to Cocker's vocal. Cocker himself appears in the video dressed as Brian May, playing the guitar solo that ends the song. Interestingly Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain makes an appearance (or an impersonator or him) from beyond the grave. A very very funny clip. ENJOY!

Hard To Explain The Strokes
The Strokes Hard To Explain

A wonderful clip by New York indie rockers The Strokes. One of the most simple clips going around with footage of them playing at a concert staged by MTV cleverly intercut with stock footage (some of which was taken from the film Koyaanisqatsi ). The music video was directed by Roman Coppola (son of Francis Ford Coppola and brother of Sofia Coppola - directing talent obviously runs in the family). Enjoy

Oxford Comma Vampire Weekend
Vampire Weekend Oxford Comma

Another great clip of 2008 - this one is for American Indie Pop band Vampire Weekend and thir extremely catchy tune Oxford Comma. The concept behind the video was for it to be filmed in one long shot, with unified visual and musical aspects. It features the band and in particular the lead singer walking through various story lines and narratives going on in the background. It is beautifully directed by English comedian Richard Ayoade (who was involved in the mighty boosh). There is alot going on but it holds together really well and is really well shot. I love it. Enjoy

Weezer Pork and Beans YouTube
Pork and Beans

This (along with the Hot Chip video for Ready for the Floor) gets my vote for the best music video of the yar. It is also one of the funniest. Anyone who has a good working knowledge of YouTube will recognize the celebrities from the site - the evolution of dance guy, miss South Carolina, the endless videos of the mentos in diet coke stunts, the Chocolate Rain song guy, Chris Crocker of 'LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!' fame. In fact here's a complete list of who's in this video. Gary Brolsma ("Numa Numa guy"), Matt McAllister, Mark Allen Hicks ("Afro Ninja"), Caitlin Upton, Judson Laipply, Chris Crocker, Kicesie, Tay Zonday, Kevin Federline (stock footage), Kelly, Ryan Weiber, Michael "Dorkman" Scott, Jeong-Hyun Lim, Dramatic Prairie Dog (including lookalikes of J-Pop group Mini Moni, who were in the original TV clip the Dramatic Prairie Dog originated from), Fritz Grobe and Stephen Voltz's Diet Coke and Mentos eruptions, parody G.I. Joe PSAs, catching Raybans with one's face, the Dancing Banana, Will It Blend?, All Your Base Are Belong to Us, Sneezing Panda, One Man Band by Connor Berge, Daft Hands, Daft Bodies, the Soulja Boy dance (listed on YouTube as "Crank That Soldier Boy"), a CGI Donald Duck and King Kong, Charlie the Unicorn, and the UFO sighting in Haiti Hoax video.

The direction is great and Matt Cullen does a wonderful job holding it together. As you'd expect this video has had alot of hits on YouTube (15million and counting). It certainly is a pop culture milestone clip and has been nominated for several awards including a grammy!. Here it is - hope you enjoy

Living On A Prayer
Living On A Prayer

Well it is the festive season so I thought I'd celebrate with this classic 1980's track. The video shot at the Olympic stadium in Los Angeles Is simple - band rehearsing concert then playing concert. The big hair, the outrageous flying stunt are just part of what remains so great about this ear - the complete excess. So here it is in it's glory - enjoy

All-American Rejects
Gives You Hell

Rockers The All American Reject show neighborly tensions in the video for their song Gives You Hell. Directed by Marc Webb the video stars Taylor from the band playing two neighbors - one a rock star type the other a more preppy white collar type - who gets woken up during the night by his rocker neighbor. Cute clip. - Enjoy

156. Just - Mark Ronson -

December 16th 2008 23:12
Hey there,

Mark Ronson would be just about the hottest DJ on the planet right now and his ability to do wonderous cover versions of songs went to a new level with this. I funky ska version of Radiohead's Just. Made for the Exit Music album of Radiohead covers it is sassy and not an unworthy version of this great song. Singer Alex Greenwald does the vocals and feature in the clip with multilpe Ronson's What's more the video parodies the ground breaking Radiohead clip and makes fun of the whole narrative with subtitles. The famous scene with all the people lying on the ground is mercilessly sent up with the same people getting up and dancing. With a sense of humour and talent to burn we will see lots from Mr Ronson I am sure. Enjoy!

Shot in dreamy black and white and featuring all the members of the band - this clip has a kind of nostalgic Beatles quality to it. It also has a nod to batman with the city light projecting the words Hey Moon. All in all an interesting clip from the Nevada based rockers and a great use of narrative and black and white to enhance the wistful nature of the song. Enjoy

An all time classic clip - wonderkind director Spike Jonze's hollywood musical inpired clip for the Icelandic Diva is a picture perfect lesson in how to make a music video. All the techniques are there from the hyper fast cutting, to the great use of fast and slow motion. The choreographed sequences are oh so memorable and the way that inanimate objects come to life is just spellbinding - it really is a trait of the director Spike Jonze. Let's hope we don't have to wait too much longer to see his feature film Where The Wild Things Are - we all know it will be brilliant. Enjoy

This radical cover of the classic Cole Porter song from High Society (which featured Frank Sinarta and Bing Crosby in the film original) was recorded for the Red Hot and Blue album - which was both a tribute to Cole Porter and a fund raiser for AIDS related charities. Iggy and Debbie take on the famous personas from the film but also put their own special stamp on it. There should be more covers like this!!! Alex Cox's direction is assured and perfect. Enjoy.

Indie trio the Yeah Yeah Yeahs made this clip to go with their beautiful song Maps. It is so simple in its design and execution yet reaches emotional depths to match the song with nothing more than the use of colour. It features the band playing in a high school gym with people watching on. Sounds simple - because it is but the result is amazing - take a look for yourself.

144. Shout To The Top - Style Council

December 13th 2008 06:58

One of my favourite songs of the 80's - Paul Weller caught in between his early punk years with the Jam and his later solo career in the 90's and beyond. This song features him singing in a jacket only he could make cool. The song is a ripper and will have you dancing around the room guaranteed - even if you are hearing it for the first time. Enjoy

An all time classic music video from one of the great artists. Michael Jackson so often used film genres for his clips (horror for thriller) and this clip draws its inspiration on the sort of gang war that lies at the heart of the musical west side story. The clip is directed by veteran Bob Giraldi and is choreographed by Michael Peters (who plays the gang leader in the white outfit). The song features a killer lead guitar rift and one of the great guitar solos by Eddie Van Halen and it represent a fusion of R & B and Rock. One for the ages - enjoy

The clip for the most angst - written song ever written was directed by Nick Egan and features a dimly lit Alanis Morissette hitch hiking her way across a desert. The song was apparently written after her first lover Dave Coulier (from the terrible sitcom Full House) ditched her. Her revenge came in the form of this angst ridden song which became a runaway hit all over the world. Enjoy

With the announcement that Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon have settled their differences and are reforming Blur - I thought I'd take a look at their most successful song. Song 2 was a working title that just stuck - with a sly killer guitar riff and a fantastic 2 minute length that makes you want to hit the repeat button on the cd/mp3 player. Directed by Sophie Muller who has done other clips for them. Have fun with this one.

Another great clip by Samuel Bayer (he of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit fame). This time with Californian hippy rockers Blind Melon. The clip stars Heather DeLoach as the "Bee Girl" — a young tap dancer wearing a homemade bee costume and large glasses, modeled after the Blind Melon album's cover: It opens on the girl's tap routine; the audience responds with laughter, and the girl runs off stage in tears. As the song plays, she wanders through a city, stopping to perform her dance for whoever will watch. Ultimately — at the point in the song where the word "escape" is repeated — she peeks through a gate, astonished, then runs through it to join a group of "bee people" of all shapes and sizes dancing joyfully in a green field. (from wikipedia).

This clip is all about the joy of life and both the wonderful song and mesmerising (and cute) visuals make that message sing out with so much heart and spirit (maybe the pre teen spirit). Enjoy.
