133. Rock The Casbah - The Clash

December 9th 2008 03:45

One of my favourite bands doing one of my favourite songs. Yes the clip for Rock the Casbah might be simple but it is effective and does a wonderful job relaying the fun of this great song. Filmed near the oil wells of Austin Texas this song is true to it's middle eastern/north African subject matter (I think it has something to do with the Algerian Wars of the 1950's and 60's) Hope you enjoy dancing around the room to this awesome song

Another staggering clip from music video master Mark Romanek - showing all the ingenuity and artistic flair at his disposal he takes references from the work of Francis Bacon and works them into this memorable song from the Nine Inch Nails (he also does their song The Perfect Drug and the amazing Johnny Cash cover of their song Hurt). I couldn't imagine any other team of artist and director coming up with something this stark and original ever. Definitely one of my all time favourites - here in all its glory - enjoy

Definitely an 80's classic. It was around this time the Police were probably considered the biggest band in the world and this lovely song cemented their place in the popular conscience. The clip is shot in high contrast black and white with long dissolves and looks really beautiful (if not a little arty). It has won numerous awards including MTV's first ever cinematography in a music video award. It is an amazing clip and song - though it is for all practical purposes about stalking - go figure (then enjoy)

The first rap video to get any real airplay - the one that brought it to the mainstream and one of the great clips of all time featuring one of the biggest bands in the world with a new force in the world of music. Producer Rick Ruben hit on the crazy idea of putting Aerosmith live together with Run DMC who were freestyling over their songs. A match made in heaven and one tht broke the rules then tore down the barriers. Word.

It's a very cool song, lots of eye candy for everyone - but if you watch it closely it is an AMAZING music video. The reason is quite simple - it is the work of french music video master and my personal favourite music video maker of all time - Michel Gondry. You will quickly spot little visual tricks that are a hall mark of Gondry's music videos and feature films. It is dazzling and sad that this is not as well known as some of his other clips - at least you can enjoy it here.

Shot in Nashville, Tennessee though it is set in Mexico (to the point where the lyrics have mexican spanish subtitles). Co directed by Jack White and the Malloy brothers is uses the red and white colour motif that has defined the band's look. The song is catchy and out and out rock and roll (Meg looks gorgeous as ever) Enjoy

113. Sweet Child O Mine - Guns N Roses -

November 25th 2008 03:03

One of the great guitar riffs of all time apparently started as a joke between guitarist slash and the drummer Steve Adler. A little finger exercise that Slash used to warm up - then bass plaver Izzy added some chords and hey presto. A simple clip but the song really doesn't need any flashy video work to carry it off. It's just the band - but a rock and roll gold star moment. Enjoy

This amazing dark beautiful clip features the lead singer Tom Yorke in stop motion animation going around the forest at night where weird and wonderful things are happening. There is so much imagination in this clip and it just meshes perfectly with the themes, tone and mood of the song. Great idea well executed. Emjoy

A great example of a social conscience type of song - with Nikelbck speaking out against the injustices of the world. The clip by Dori Oskowitz is the band in the studio intercut with a history lesson about some of the terrible things that have taken place over the past 50 years including the civil rights fight in the US and the imprisonment of Nelson Mandela. A great video and one that opens up the issue of human rights to a whole new generation well done - enjoy!

Oklahoma rockers Hinder hit the charts with this soft power ballad. The clip is a stock standard band playing by candlelight - but it is done particularly well by veteran music video director Nigel Dick (the man responsible for both Oasis' Wonderwall and Britney Spears Hit Me One More Time). Hope you enjoy.

Great clip - psychotic rock chick locked in a cell with just instruments and speakers. She goes into a rock fuelled frenzy of a wanna be star. Directed by french duo Jonas and Francois - this one is going to be big. Here it is

For my 100th posting on this blog I thought I would choose the video clip voted by Rolling Stone Magazine as the #1 clip of all time (that's their choice not mine - which I will put up soon). It is made by the brilliant Jonathan Glazer who made the Virtual Insanity clip for Jamiroquoi and has gone on to direct the feature film Sexy Beast. The stark and beautiful surrealism of this clip is matched by its though provoking imagery. Starring Dennis Lavant as the muttering man. The final scene, the final moment with it's almost religious overtones as a man stands up to the pressures of life is both haunting and memorable. A must see

Director Jay Martin choses to use split screen and does it quite brilliantly for this clip for the Plain White T's song Hey There Delilah. It has a real retro 1970's feel to it and is strikingly shot. One of my favourite clips of 2007 and it has had over 34 million hits at the time of this posting. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

An epic clip for an epic song. This nine minute extravaganza from directed Andrew Morahan (of Highlander II and The Sorcerer fame) features the filmed wedding of Guns N' Roses front man Axl Rose to his then girlfriend Stephanie Seymour. The lavish production values, and outrageous swirling helicopter shots during guitarist Slash's bit solo make for one of the memorable music videos ever (the most requested on MTV) and a truly fitting tribute to the over the top excesses of the late eighties/early nineties (the song and clip came out in 1992). So here it is in all of it's nine minute glory - enjoy.

Another beautifully made clip to a great song. The lead singer of Travis - Francis Healy is hunted down by children in this clip. They use everything from sticks and stone to arrows to a world war 2 bomber. John Hardwick's smart direction and use of slow motion makes it fit in with the beauty of the song. There are love allusions to Hitchcock's North by Northwest and Kubrick's The Shining. Music video film making at its best. Enjoy

The clip that made the band - exquisitely shot, lit and composed = the Cure front man Robert Smith obviously got what the director was trying to do an put in a breathtaking performance that came to symbolize everything about the band. The amazing cave scenary adds to the near perfect video - one of my favourites - hope you enjoy
